Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

When was the track built?

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was built as part of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics development programme. The foundation stone was laid in 1989, while the first car race was a round of the 1991 Spanish Touring Car Championship.

When was its first Grand Prix?

Two weeks after the touring cars raced at Barcelona, it was Formula 1’s turn. The track enjoyed a sensational debut, with Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna’s famous eyeball-to-eyeball drag race down the straight, before Mansell took the lead and drove on to victory.

Thanks visibleman :)

I hope both Ferraris do well here and increase that gap to the RB/Verstappen again :p

Gonna be kinda interesting to see what Merc bring, are they gonna do the whole 1 car in Barcelona test spec? Any other major upgrades? Will the lower speeds help them just avoid the problem?

I'm not sure where these reports have come from that Mercedes are going to run at least one of their cars in the first testing specification. I've certainly not read them.

I have read that they're expected to bring floor updates, but I suppose we'll see later today which car(s) they'll use as they'll be sent for scrutineering.

Think some reporters inaccurately stated they'd run both to compare but what they're actually doing will be comparing current spec with the one run in Barcelona in Feb as it's the only real world comparison they have to understand if the porpoising can be resolved as the original spec didn't suffer anywhere near the same as when they went to Bahrain.

Obviously without knowing the cars themselves, the simplified assumption is that adding downforce, especially to the rear of the car, will make porpoising much more likely. Mercedes say the original dummy/systems-check car was much slower (in simulations) than the car they took to Bahrain, so it's fair to assume that it produced less downforce.

If they do indeed run one of the Barcelona-spec cars this weekend then they truly are lost.

Kubica in for Zhou in FP1. Apparently this year, they are required to replace every driver with an alternative at least once during the season, I think the idea is to give more opportunities to rookie drivers to try out an F1 car, not sure how Kubica fits in for that!

Interesting that they've removed the stay, suggests that they've put some significant stiffening under the floor, perhaps?

Hopefully it'll help, although were the Mercs one of teams suffering a lot with being overweight?

I'd like to see a good result for Sainz in his home GP

Ferrari one two would be good although i have a feeling Max might pip them both.

It's going to be a Merc 1-2 now they've solved their porpoising issues. Place your bets now.

Edit: I was joking here, but looking up the currents odds 33-1 for Hamilton and Russell actually seems pretty good value. There's a surprise winner in almost every season of F1, and with the Mercs in a clear third place most of the time, you'd expect them to be the most likely to pick up the pieces if we get a crazy race.

Yeah, not seen them anywhere even remotely official, and wouldn't be great to see so likely just some random nonsense really :p

Mercedes do indeed have updates to the floor outward edge and T-tray. No sign of the pre-season Barcelona car.

nice hinges

Interesting, it does look like that piece is separate/hinges (up I guess when it contacts the floor?) Surely that can't be legal? Movable aerodynamic device and all that...

I don't think they're hinges - hinges arranged around a curve like that would barely work if at all - I think they're some kind of fastener between sections. With the budget cap and the weight problems the bits they're putting on are much cruder than what we're used to.

Although I suppose another possibility is that it has some adjustability so they can try a few things in practice before locking it in place for the race.

Yeah, on closer inspection I think you're right. Definitely crude compared to previous years, it kinda feels wrong :p

I think they may have a mount for the stay as well but maybe not put it on yet/gonna try without?
