spares or repairs cars

Why on earth would your "mate" be selling TDCI engines for £150? He is either being a very kind chap, or is a very bad businessman.

Well I and other dealers often trade cars out at the same price I bought them at, does that make me and them very bad businessmen?

I also often sell cars which I don't want to my friends at cost.

Breakers buy cars for peanuts, so by letting him have an engine at £150 means he's most likely to be still making a profit but not a big one.

Finding an engine will not be an issue, they are common as muck.

The problem is it may be in another damaged car. Taking and engine out and putting a new one in will be a weekends work for a novice home mechanic.

While the engine is out, a clutch and belts will be no extra effort.

I'm not very savvy on focus prices but £1200 for a 2004 focus (with new clutch and belts) doesn't sound too bad to me.

Go on then, i'll give you a weekend and your driveway to swap a tdci lump, cambelt it (non keyed pulleys?, i can't remember off the top of my head) and fit a new clutch. Oh, and it has to run afterwards...heres hoping you know how to program tdci injectors to the car...

TDCI's are a pig to work on Jon is spot on, its not as easy as wiring it up and turning the key.

TDDI's are easy tho.

My local breakers are pretty good for engines, I picked up a VAG PD lump with turbo and ancilliaries for £180,I normally pick up any modern engines up of him to make a few quid on Ebay, the most i paid for an engine was for a Civic CDTI and that was £300!

I'd have had that focus just for a breaker, good price tbh.

She got a good deal there, congrats. I guess whoever bought it is going to DIY repair it :)

They're actually picking it up on a flatbed from Gloucester (car is in Croydon), so that's going to cost them a few hundred (if they guy was telling the truth about having to pay somebody to get it for him)

I think you have missed my point.

Engine swaps are not hard, just time consuming. THe clutch and cambelt are only a pig on these engines as access is such a pain, with the engine out this is not a problem.

I am not familiar with the injection system on ford tdci lumps and was not aware it was any different to every other car and made the assumption the ECU would do the work if you used the same model parts.

Again anyone familiar with a MSDIY and has access to a laptop should be able to get it going, at least well enough to drive to garage to tune.
