Speakers/amp/etc

I'm not totally sure fox has access to fabricate alu brackets needed. This is great when you have your own CAD/Lathe/whatever, but for the average joe who's tool kit just about includes screwdrivers and a socket set, its a bit too far...

This is the bit where I lose interest and go and argue about Corsas and diesels instead :( Thats what usually happens.

I'd really question how much utility you'll get for your money - will you really appreciate the difference? (from a fellow non-audiophile)

For a sub? Yes. Absolutely. Probably the single biggest improvement you can do for car audio. And I am not a "bass junky" at all.

I have vents under the rear seats, so I'd rather not put stuff there.

They go under one of the front seats normally on the floor, but fair enough if there's no room.

Having a read sounds like there's not the space in the E39, so you're stuck with one in the boot if you want to go with a sub.

Amping up some front components and rear 6x9s like you have may go a good way to getting more punch.

I know people knock 6x9s, and I don't think I'd want to have them plus a sub necessarily, but I had some many years ago instead of a sub and they did the job I wanted them to ok.

Way. It's referred to in the business as "The Punishment Car" and was allocated to me in the absence of anything else being available in the pool and considered preferable to a petrol hire car (which I'd have to fuel myself and claim back, which is a very slow process)
It's below my level though and therefore wholly unsuitable, and my hard working line manager has managed to source me an A3 to replace it next Wednesday.
Luckily the A3 is also quite old (08) and I get to choose a list car to replace it in the summer. Win!

I've done 1000 tedious miles in the Corsa in a week, painful.

Good luck with your bangin tunes.

I've never found new speakers give much extra bass, at best they just make it a bit louder and clearer.

Fox clearly doesn't want the hassle of getting a jigsaw out and cutting up MDF, sticking on carpet etc... if the carpet didn't match he'd be gutted as he wants it to look great to match the rest of the car.

IMO, if you want a sub, you want that kit. If the head unit is 'clever' enough to just route bass to that sub I'd imagine you'll have a notable difference as the other speakers will be playing more sensible frequencies so distortion should be reduced.

You can then get better speakers if you so wish, but I dobut you'll need it.

Personally I'd look at it in 3 stages, try speakers first but agree replacing like sized ones for like won't notice massive difference in bass levels. (although just seen the above posts, 6x9 woofers could help)

Second get an amp in there as this should make a difference, then third if still not satisfied get a sub of some sort.

Panasonic did this which is a bit of a quirky take on it http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/pioneer-ts-wx77a.html, no idea if it's any good :p

Also seen people talk about mounting the flat underseat ones up in the passenger footwell. End of the day if you want a sub it's got to go somewhere :(

Look at the pictures. They're just L Brackets which you can buy from any hardware shop! No fabrication needed!

If it were me I'd seriously consider it. Anyway I've said enough on that idea so I'll stop. :)

Speakers/amp won't make that much difference, **** sound quality will just be louder **** sound quality. The head units in e39/e46 cars are **** but the speakers are very good, no other way about it. Changing just the head unit and keeping stock speakers sounds like you completely overhauled the entire hifi setup in the car but obviously a HU swap for Fox isn't an option.

I agree changing the HU makes a world of difference, I'd have thought though that the one Fox stuck in recently was better than the standard nav affair, and about the best he'll get without changing it again for something not as OE looking which he wants to retain.

I don't think his problem is the quality as such, just that it's a bit 'weak', if that makes sense.
