Hello All

I’m hoping someone can do a quick double check on a spec for me. I’m planning to run XP and use it for gaming (flight sims) and general home use, and I probably won’t overclock it. I probably won’t be upgrading components every few months and will be living with this spec for 18 months or so. Will upgrade to Vista at some point no doubt.

ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz LGA 775 Retail

OCZ Gold 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2G8004GK - Retail

EVGA 640-P2-N825-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

Western Digital Raptor X WD1500AHFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM

CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 620W Power Supply - Retail

Antec P182 Gun Metal Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S203B - OEM

I have a few questions.

Is the standard heatsink and fan acceptable on the Q6600 if I don’t plan to overclock?

Is the 620W PSU excessive for this spec? I have a 2 year old Tagan TG480-U01 Power supply already but I assume it is marginal to power all of this….is that correct.

Is the Antec case overkill for my application, I do have a Coolmaster Wave Master case that I could re-use.

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Cheers

Paul

Make sure you get the SLACR Stepping, 95W quad core not the old one

Only thing i would change personally is the hard drive in your spec to something like the
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-120-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=

I think you should order everything but the case build it and see if temps are all ok etc then decide if you need a new case.I can't see anything wrong with your spec looks well researched.Yes stock cooler is no problem if you aren't overclocking ,hardly likely to sell quads that will go bang on the supplied cooler are they.

And you could get away with a lesser power supply easily but i wouldn't get one with less than 40(A) on the 12 v rail to be safe. But think of it this way what if in the future when you upgrade or may change your mind and decide to overclock it you will be kicking yourself that you didn't get a better psu and what happens in the gpu market in regards to 12v rail requirements a year down the line.

What if killer cards come along and they require say 35 amps on the 12 v rail ? will be kind of pushing it on a 40 amp capable psu.In my opinion there are better psu's for the same price as the 620 such as tagan or seasonic but this is also very good. The tagan TG800-U33 ITZ Series is around the same price and has 64a on the 12v rail available.MY 520hx has 40a the 620 hx has 50a.

I have an e6420 overclocked to 3.4 ghz 2 hdd 2 x dvd 2x 120 mm fans 2gb ram evga 8800 gts 640mb overclocked abit ip35 pro 4 usb devices and all runs fine on my corsair hx 520.So yes you could get away with it but depends how long you wish to keep your psu and more so what happens with graphics cards in the near future in regards to power requirements.

my 620w does fine but i think the psu has poor quality cables id try and get somthign diffrent tbh

Thanks for the replies gent's.

I'm going to go ahead and order. I'll hold back on the case and see how my Coolermaster copes, don't know why I didn't think of that. Might see if I can upgrade the case fans while it's empty.

Still torn on the PSU and HD. Corsair does seem a popular choice on here, in fact since I originally posted there must have been 7 or 8 specs posted that all look very similar.

thanks for taking the time to check out my specs.

cheers
