Spec me £10k, fun but not too impractical

Edit: forgot to say the suspension on the R27 is completely different to the normal 197's.
Yeah, it's the same as the Cup suspension isn't it?

I'm going to go look tomorrow but I won't be able to buy, I've got to juggle money out of savings before I can as I wasn't planning on buying just yet. That said if the price was right there's no reason why I shouldn't, I also suspect cars won't be flying off forecourts right now which could work in my favour? If I do like it and try to buy then I'll want to haggle to at least £8.5k through "I'm going back up north in the New Year*, either sell the car to me or you don't" tactics as I'm perfectly willing to walk away as I wasn't aiming to buy til April anyway!

* At folks' over the festive season in SE London, live in Northumberland where car dealerships are a little more sparse

Ya the R27 has the cup suspension on it, which is, from what i've read from unbiased opinions, considerably better handling than the 197 stock. Its 7mm lower and 30% stiffer, and something else which i can't remember :p

I'm not fussed about the anthracite colour wheels, or red callipers, but the fact the R27's come with the factory fitted recaros is a winner for me as the seats are absolutely gorgeous and were around a £1k option on the 197 iirc. Also the fact theres only 500 is pretty cool and should help it not depreciate too much. Cars are flying this time of year, great time to buy. I've looked at many hot hatches over the past few weeks and almost all of them are sold. Cars are being reduced to get through the christmas period, and those who still have money left are picking up bargains!

The R27 debuted the cup suspension which you could then have either as an option on a normal 197 or as standard on the 197 cup, it meant lower and stiffer suspension, anthracite alloys, red brake calipers (as opposed to silver) and marginally quicker and heavier steering. The handling is arguably better, especially on a nice smooth road or track but in reality the slightly softer set up helps on bumpy b-roads as it gives you a bit more confidence with it's compliance. As said the R27 also all came with recaros and also climate control as standard....I think auto lights and wipers too.

The one you're looking at (08) model will also have the slightly revised 5th and 6th gear ratios which are longer to help cruising fuel economy (which in reality don't really help economy and only noise levels - only marginally though).

Options I'd be looking for it to have are climate control and the mp3/cd player upgrade, slightly better speakers as standard but easy to upgrade, the 6cd changer is a right ballache.

I've sort of found a nice S4 Avant, but it's a little different to what you asked for, but still under 10k + FSH! and practical :)

Mind, its and 04 plate though, but still worth looking at :p

Link.

20mpg if your lucky and drive like a vicar :D

Awesome car but running costs are a little off putting.

Thanks for the left field S4 suggestion, not what I'm after :D

Went and looked, had both the 10k and 20k services done on it, drove well and looked in good nick. The dealer seemed determined to not budge from £9k but was willing to increase the warranty from 6 months to 12 months (RAC Warranty, apparently costs £199, any good?)

I'm still willing to play hard ball and wait to buy a car, going to phone back and say I can't really do more than £8.5k: what do the world of OcUK think?

By so much so it makes a difference? Having driven both, I don't think so.

You just get a massive wadge of power at a really irritating moment with the Astra - it really is the opposite of linear. I can't imagine the ST being as bad, it certainly hasnt got the reputation for it that the Astra has.

Wow I didnt realise a 2007 onwards STI costs less than 10k now, oh thats right it doesn't.

It's a good thing that he didn't mention anything about a STI then.

£10,000 will buy you a 06/07 WRX with ease. Of course if you weren't trying so hard to be a smart **** you would know that.

06/07 doesn't meet his criteria of warrenty though does it.

What warranty requirement? He said he'd prefer something coming off of the back of a warranty. A 06/07 car is just about as close to "off the back of warranty" as you're realistically going to get.

There subsequently isn't anything obvious preventing him from purchasing a 3rd party warranty for one either.

Also when blobeye is mentioned im fairly sure that an STI is meant.

What on earth gives you that idea?
