Would prefer to have normal speakers instead of Sats but im aware that £200 is a pretty tight budget so Sats would be fine.

Many Thanks.

Are you bothered with sound quality? Do you want full 5.1 speakers too?
imo for that budget look at a stereo integrated amplifier and standmount speakers, even then that's pushing it for quality and will need to go second hand.

Have a look for the Yamaha AV59 pack. It truly is superb for 200 quid, it has two optical inputs. More info over at AVforums, theres a few pretty big threads.

The Yamaha AV59 pack looks awesome, thanks.

Am checking some reviews now.

I'm very pleased with mine. I'm sure its no where near as good as more expensive kit, but for the price I think it sounds great!

Corrected. :)

To the OP I suggest going to have a demo of a £200 5.1 system, and a £200 2ch amp & speakers.

Squiffy, while i generally agree with you, i think a lot of its down to expectations.

My dad would be thrilled with a £100 all in one pack 5.1 setup for movies, while i wouldn't be happy with it.

Music would REALLY show how horrible it is, but my dad again has a £350 technics stereo system, which he thinks is the dogs, its not bad, but it cant touch my seperates setup, which isnt the best tbh (Arcam Alpha 7, FLAC on HTPC, Celestion impact 10 speakers).

So long as they dont expect it to be awesome, and just want it to do the job, it'll be fine.

Not everyone would want to spend £1k + on a setup, and not everybody expects it to be great.

Some people are happy with a lot of bass, directional sound and to be able to watch a film...

Just food for thought, as you do tend to overspec the simplest of requests, not everybody wants to spend a lot, and not everybody demands the best ;)

Good post :)

Could'nt agree more. Some people are more into it than others, myself I just wanted a surround amp for about 200 quid. I know that it isn't going to sound like 1000 quids worth of gear, I did my research and It wasn't an impulse buy.

I think the AV59 sounds fantastic for the money, and I would recommend it to anyone on a similiar budget.

I have a question though. How can a 2 channel compare to a 5.1 for watching films? This is a genuine question, and not intended to annoy squiffy. Can a 2 channel amp do a good job of surround?

A 2 channel amplifier & stereo speakers will sound better than a av amp and 5.1 speakers of the identical total budget. A 2 channel amp won't do a good job of mult-channel surround, as it's stereo only channel. So the multi-channel mix will have to be downmixed to stereo. But it'll sound better (the 2 channel system) To get identical sound quality from a 5.1 system you need to spend considerbly more. A 5.1 quality system will sound better than the 2 channel of similar quality (not total cost) as you get the immersive cinema surround sound as it was meant to be heard.

Noob question:
What is the point of plugging in the video signals into the Amp?

I'm looking at some sort of sound system for my TV, only just started looking though

Routing everything (audio and video) to the av amp then onto the display makes the system easier to use.

Switch TV on, and set to the single input that's coming from the amp.
Connect video and audio to the av amp
Use macro function on your remote for each activity.

When you do this you don't need to change input on the TV, as the amp just switches inputs. You don't need to even use the input buttons on the remote for your amp, as the macro does it for you. If you've got several sources you might find the TV doesn't have enough inputs. Amps have more of them. Also you only need to use one audio & video leads from the amp to the TV (left & right and video)

2ch audio playback would be nice.

Am getting the AV59, will see how we go :)

All HTIB should have 2 channel mode, just don't expect miracles from satellite speakers and the cheap bundled midwoofer.

Would be nice to use it to play back CD's/MP3's from the PC via the optical out.

As long as it sounds better than my current sub £100 3 year old Mini-Hi-Fi, i'll be happy :)

Going about it in the right way if you ask me, not expecting miracles so I'm sure you'll be chuffed.
