A colleague of mine is considering purchasing a d3ll for £1,325 and I was wondering what type of gaming rig could be built for that sum. Note: He's not interested in overclocking at all.

Requirements include:

Media card reader
Webcam
All in one Photo/Print/Copy/Fax/Scan
500Gb+ HDD
20"+ TFT

Spec away please!

How's this?:

Spec Mk. II:

Slightly overbudget but it includes 4 GiB RAM, a quad core processor, a great case with matching drive bezel and card reader, 512 MiB graphics card, an excellent motherboard that could take another GPU in crossfire for future upgrades, the fastest 500 GB HDD, and Windows. :)

No need for a Quad if its only for gaming. He will benefit more from the extra speed than the extra cores.
Yes, if it's just for gaming an E6850 (preorder but superior) or an E6700 (available now) would be better. However, most gaming machines end up getting used for many things including heavy multitasking. More cores are good in my eyes. It's up to the OP really. :)

I notice that 8800 GTXs prices are starting to plunge. Wouldn't this sort of alternative to the the above suggestion provide bigger bang per buck for a gaming oriented machine?

OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - OEM £274.99 (£323.11)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £121.99 (£143.34)

And come in a bit cheaper.

my friend spent 1000 on a DELL pc even though i said dont do it, i said get alien ware at least. year a little more expensive but youd get a hell lot better then the DELL. Or i said even better buy the parts from overclockers and we can build it.

Nope, he went for the dell. He got the 1300XT and the 5200 AMD duel core. The processor was ok, but could have done better and the graphics card was appalling really for the price.

It didn't come with a sound card and came with 1gb of PC 4200 DDR2 ram. Perfetic for the price.

Dont get DELL if you want to game. Ill do a spec as well. Ill post it in 5 or 10 min.

Cross fire with that card is unlikely as its just better to upgrade by the tiume you can afford that. Especialy in DX10 at the moment.

The motherboard could be 50 quid cheaper and still do the same thing considering he doesn't want to overclock. But i think its perfect other then that. Just could save some money thats all :)

It was only a joke mate, but if it's causing offense then I will gladly remove it.

Heres a spec. I know its over. But really, i think this is well worth paying the extra 100.

If you wanted to fit within the budget, just go for 2gb of ram instead of 4gb and your pritty much on your budget:

Total : £1,269.44

:EDIT: I just checked... im not over. I think the graphix card should be upgraded to a GTX and that uses up all the budget abouts :)

Or you could upgrade the CPU. But id rather upgrade to a GTX personaly.
