Hi, I'm looking to get a new system in the new year sometime around February; I have an estimated top end budget of £2,000.00 and need everything except a desk, chair and printer.

It needs to be a good all rounder, capable of gaming, strategy and FPS mostly, with pleanty of storage and media playing capabilities. Preferably with a good sized monitor...

Hi there,

If you are wanting something around February, then I would suggest posting back again a few weeks before you plan to buy the kit. I say this because between then an now we will see the release of the Intel 3000 series Sandy Bridge-E boards and CPUs, the transition from 40nm to 28nm graphics card transistors and most likely the prices of RAM, SSDs and HDDs will be a fair bit different from what they are today.

As a quick outline I would suggest:
i7 2600K CPU (unless a sandy bridge E hex core chip will be a big benefit for you)
decent P67/Z68 board
nice SSD - like a Crucial M4 (128GB+)
three or more 2TB hard drives (like the samsung F4) in RAID5 for storage
A nice 27in 2560x1440 IPS monitor like the Dell U2711 or HP ZR2740w
A good CPU cooler like the Thermalright Silver arrow
8GB of RAM (DDR3 1600MHz, decent brand, low profile cooler)
Good case for air cooling - like the Silverstone Raven 2E or Coolermaster HAFX
Top-end, single GPU 28nm graphics card
~750W modular good quality PSU from the likes of Corsair/Antec/Enermax/Seasonic
Nice mouse like the Logitech G500
A keyboard you like the look of
OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

For sound, do you prefer a headset or speakers? (and if a headset do you want it to be wireless?)

It's honestly pointless looking now if you're buying in Febuary, prices and products will change. However I would get something like this:

Obviously things like the case, mouse, keyboard etc. are much more a personal choice but the core spec is pretty solid.

Personally I wouldn't be bothered for the over clocked bundles and would prefer one GTX 580?

As everyone else has said best of waiting a month or two for prices to drop/new releases as any build given now will most likely change come the time you want to build. I'd say come back and re-post like december/january time for a more accurate build so you get your money's worth!

I always recommend the inclusion of a cheap Nvidia card if going with an ATI card as the main display card. Inorder to have access to PhysX whenever its available. It really does make a difference.

The bundle was just for ease, the OP may not want to OC. Can always add each thing seperately for a few quid less.

As for the GPUs no, I wouldn't go with a 580 unless I was planning to add another card later on. The two 6950 2gbs will outperform a single 580 in almost all situations (particularly at the high res of the 27" screen I specced).

4 months is a long time in the PC world. Who knows what will be available for what price in February, remake this topic sometime around then.
