Hi all, im after at the title says a nice 40” TV as cheap as i can or with a good deal. Mainly want a sony,LG or Samsung. I have no idea what the price ranges are.

ta Mp4

I would recommend the Sony 40W3000.

For SD pricture - on Freeview - It's very very good.

What are you going to be using the TV for mostly?

If its gaming, get an 40" LCD (the samsungs mentioned are good)

If its mostly Standard Def TV and DVD's - Get a 42" Plasma (panasonic or samsung)

Everyone raves on about the Samsung M87... But I don't really think it's that great for SD.

Once it has been setup correctly it is good with SD to be honest, out of the box it looks awful no matter what source. There are plenty of settings on avforums.

Mp4 - Yep thats the one, its a great looking tv thats for sure

Have you got the M86/7, if so what settings you using? Im getting it soon and want to get the best SD quality possible through Sky+. I got one guys settings of avforums, but the thread is like 76 pages, dont really want to read it all :D

I had the m87 when it was lauched but due to faults Samsung couldnt fix at the time I got a refund and now have the f86 (which uses the same panel). I used the settings here... http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/2007/04/22/samsung-le40m86bd-settings/ but I had skyHD which uses HDMI so the settings will be a little different for you. Its worth having a look in the huge thread and try a few different versions out to see which you prefer, as all viewing environments differ.

Yea i noticed those settings too when i read the review. Probably will need to spend a few hours messing about for the best picture. Ill probably get SkyHD eventually when more HD content comes out.

Also, do you use a normal DVD player, or is it an upscaling one? (Assuming you dont use an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player) Its just that i have an old Toshiba DVD player that was very good at the time, but i dont know how it will fair with the TV. Will the TV upscale it okay by itself or will i need to get an upscaling DVD player?

I have only ever used the xbox 360 hd-dvd and the ps3 for blu-ray. I have played dvd's though both so they will have been upscaled by the player. If the dvd player has a component connection you should be able to get a decent picture with the tv doing the work, anything less than that such as scart or composite isnt really going to be as good. But as I said I have no experience of this on this tv so results may vary, hopefully someone can post who does use a dvd player with the tv...

I checked the back of my DVD player and it does have a component connection (im guessing it is cause they are red green and blue ports). Obviously it wont do HD cause its like 3-4 years old, but should it give a better picture through it anyway than scart? The model is Toshiba SD-110E.

Sorry to hijack guys buy I'm going for the 40" Sammy and I'd like to know which would be a good bracket and maybe the cheapest place to buy?

Thanks

is Blu-Ray in leed with HD-DVD? is this the next best thing?

if thats the case then i might as well future proof and get a lcd

Blu-Ray will be the next best thing and is the High-Def equivalent of DVD's.

It's not that a plasma can't do Blu-Ray - it can do it very well - just as well as an LCD. But there's a price premium for a 1080p Plasma at the moment.

Get down to a decent shop when its quiet and demo some TV's. Don't just look at them when they're on the wall - tune them to a TV channel.

The Plasma vs LCD debate is an ongoing argument. I prefer plasmas - and seeing as everyone here was pushing you too an LCD - I thought i'd provide the alternative:

LCD's are brighter and more vivid, cheaper for high resolution. Plasmas do much better blacks, handle motion better and deal better with standard definition though are at risk from screen burn.
