Hi all im in the market for a new 5.1 and projector setup for the new house im moving into, basically i have a budget of 2k-2.5k and it would be nice if they shipped all over Europe but not a necessity.

I want a a system for watching movies/tv mostly but some music too in a pretty large room about 7:5 meters.

I dont want a cheap all in one sound system so that is out of the question, this is for my dad who has been using a cheap phillips 5.1 which sounds ok but no where near the quality he is after.

I have a custom 2.1 setup in my room so i know what im looking for but i cant find any good sites and would love to see what you guys would recommend.

Thank's in advance :)

If your spending that much money I would recommend going to Avforums and asking on there, not that people on here don't know anything but there are many experts on there,

Good luck though, I want a projector :(

I have no idea but as you like us. :)

Some kind of 1080p projector. A denon/yamaha/pioneer amp and a 5.1 speaker package.
specifics I have no Idea. I suspect the projector will be about 1k atleast so I am interested as I am after a 5.1 system in a similar price range and am considering Wharfdale or Mission speakers.

My only advice would be don't skimp on the projector or receiver. Spend the most money on them, speakers you should be able to get a decent set but at least with a decent receiver you can upgrade them at a later date. Also, 5.1/7.1? Will you be wanting HD audio (I would recommend it, future proof wise at least).

Also, what will you be doing screen wise? Wall, roll down screen? Look into it to see what best fits the lighting conditions in your room. 1080p is a must.

Thanks guys well screen wise i will be using a 100" roll down and that's not in the budget,i was looking at a epson projector they have herd good things about them anyone got any ideas on them?

What are the room conditions? is this for a dedicated room where you can control the light - as in can you block out every last bit of it? or near enough? I'm asking because if may mean having to choose one projector over another. Also room size? 100" is quite big and some projectors would need to be around 5 metres back to throw that kind of image. double check the maths before you buy!

My advice would be to look at DLP projectors, they offer greater black levels generally. the 'rainbow effect' is hardly seen in modern DLP systems, so don't worry about that.

I think you can be comfortably accommodated with your budget for a decent enough 5.1 and a 1080p DLP projector. Don't forget to leave room in your budget for cables and sundries, mounts and so on as they can amount into the hundreds pretty swiftly.

The projector will be wall mounted at the rear of the room which is about 7m back from the wall where it will be projected onto,it will only be used at night for watching movies and playing the odd game im using a full hd 47" lcd for my main tv.

Can you give me a example of a good 1080p dlp projector?

Have a look at the Optoma HD20 (excellent reviews and for under £1k it is a good shout at a full hd projector for home cinema use.

+1 for the HD20.

However, I would go see it first. Many ppl are sensitive to the Rainbow Effect, and you want to make that it doesnt affect you and anyone else in the house that would be watching it.

on DLP RGB colours are spilt and shown seperately at a very fast rate to fool your eyes into thinking you are seeing a single image. However when images are fast moving you eyes can pick up the individual colours which effectively gives you a Rainbow effect... on some people this can make them feel ill.

Its not that the colours are shown in different places, its more to do with where your eye picks up the image. It affects some people and not others.

At least this is my understanding of it.

with new DLP's the rainbow effect I think is less noticable if your susceptible to it (DLP's with DarkChip 3 tech and a fast colour wheel), but as above I would recommend you try one first.

Onkyo amps and AV Receivers are usually highly rated for good bang for buck

The 'rainbow effect' is compleatly relative to the individual, and it very much is something some people have to worry about. DLP projectors are great but I still see rainbows on every model Ive ever looked at except the 3 chip systems that dont use a wheel - the only way to tell is to go and look at a demo and your eye's wont work the same as anyone elses.

We can't really direct you to such sites, since they will all have something which overlaps with OcUK (can't post competitor links).

I have to say, if I were spending £2k+ on a front projection setup, I certainly wouldn't be using a roll down screen!
