Spec me a 6 cylinder BMW.

Didn't morgan but the BMW V8 in their top of the range Aero car instead of the Rover one?

Why is it not going anywhere near a track? Chased one around Castle Combe on a track day, it had plenty of negative camber on slicks and handled very well.

Bit, yea. You want to find one with a manual box and preferably some other bits on it too if you can though. Some history too (as it doesn't mention mileage). Get on RR, V8 owner's forum, R&S, places like that :)

Cool I'll follow it up when we have more details of compatibility from the manufacturer :)

Think he's off to the factory next week so we'll find out then

It's going to be a christmas present from my Mum, so build starts in december!

He's still adamant that he's going to use the 1.8 initially, but I'm seeing him on Sunday for lunch so I'll find out if he's had a change of mind after visiting the factory.

I'm still leaning towards something like an old 323i, he doesnt want it to be too lary - so that should give it a bit more power and a better noise, while still being relatively cheap to buy.

It's not something he's going to rush - the fun is all in the building for him so it'll be "done when it's done" :)

iaind, I've got a BMW straight 6 engine if it's any use to you? It's only a baby as it's from the E36 320i but it's nice and smooth and has only done 75k. Hardly a powerhouse but it sounds great as you'd expect and your dad might be happier with it if he's put off by big engines. Anyway, it's sat on a pallet in storage at the moment and has all ancillaries.

Get an E36 325i (or just the engine M50B25 or M50B25TU). Bombproof compared to the later M52 and M54, and simple to work on. Parts are cheap and an entire engine and box can be had for £300~

Why the 325i?

I thought the 328i was the one to go for, as it was more powerful, and even more so if you put the manifold from the 325i on it?

I get that you're an E36 guru, so I'm asking not questioning... :)

I'd personally pick a V8 if you are going to that effort.

Never had a shot of one in anything small, but they are still great fun to drive.

Iain, what is your dad planning on doing with it?
