Hi,
I've just receieved a HIS IceQ XT in exchange for a faulty X1800XT (2 month RMA wait but worth it :D ). Unfortunately though, my system is now randomly shutting down when running a game or 3D mark so atm I'm not bothering with either incase I cause permanent damage. My PSU is a 500w FSP BlueStorm which should be up to the job but the 12v line reads 11.8v idle and drops to 11.6/5v under load! I've also had to wind my CPU overclock back from 2.9ghz to 2.4ghz (default) or my system would hang at the XP spash screen (I can't even run 12 x 205=2.460ghz!).

Anyway. If you'll be kind enough I have 2 questions that need answering before I shell out on a new PSU:

1: Do we all agree on the above IE definately a PSU issue.

2: Whats the best 600w PSU that you can recommend for £80'ish (although I could stretch to £90 max if I had to).

Cheers.

PS Its definately not temperature related as its never hit 70c underload/44 idle, plus the heatsink only ever gets luke warm to the touch (my X1800 used to get piping hot). The the rest of my system temps are fine.

Cheers.

Seasonic or EnerMax IMO. Unfortunatly over budget, dunno what else to reccomend.

first of all, thats fairly normal.

secondly, you dont need a 600 watt psu, hell a good 400 watt psu will power your entire system very well.

personally i recommend the akasa pax power 460 watt psu. will be more than enough for what you need.

me =
X1800XT 512mb crossfire master.
opteron 148 @ 2.95Ghz 1.45v
2 gigs of xms over volted
2 hard drives
4 usb devices
opticle drive
water cooling
lights
2X 120mm blue LED fans

and my psu ? Akasa 400 watt pax power.

Thanks Fella's.

I used to have a 430w Noisetaker in an older system which was excellent, so common sense is telling me to wait until I can afford the Enermax(another week!).

My current PSU should have been up to the job though. Maybe I'm being more safe than sorry, although the extra headroom for future upgrades wouldn't go amiss.

Cheers.

Welcome to the forums. :)

To see if it is the PSU have you disconnected everything except the essentials, like just have card, a hard drive plugged in to see if 3DMarks manages to run etc...

Thanks for the welcome.

Yes I've tryed disconnecting my optical drives and case fans but the PC still completely shuts itself off at any given point when in 3D. I've formatted my HDD/fresh XP install, latest drivers, etc, etc, and system IRQ's seem in order. This exact system never crashed once in 7 month when using the X1800 leading me to beleive it can only be the PSU or X1900 at fault, atm I'm leaning towards a dodgy PSU.

Another thing to note is since fitting the X1900XT I have to run my processor at default speeds (losing a 500Mhz overclock), tbh it seems the card is draining everything the PSU has to offer.

Cheers.

sorry to hijack,my current system is powered by a noisetaker 600watt, im thinking of adding another 7900gt, will this psu cope ok. my current card is an xfx 7900gt extreme edition any advice would be appreciated

I doubt the problem is with your PSU to be completely honest, a friend of mine is running his Core 2 Duo E6300, 2GB GeIL DDR2-800, and Connect3D X1900XT 512MB just fine on his Antec 350W (one of the ones that comes with a case, we were surprised to find that it has 32A on the 12V rail) and his system is perfectly stable.

I am runing the exact same setup but with a shed load of LEDs and fans on an Akasa 460W (very similar model to locutus12's) and I can vouch for these PSUs being incredibly solid.

Shutting down, as in when it goes completely off the only way to get it back on is to take the kettle lead out of it, and plug it back in to get it to come on, as just pressing the power on button doesn't work, thats deffo the PSU, hasn't got enough power to feed the card so when it reaches its limit it shuts off, ala Q-Tecs, they are known for the same problem, musn't have enough amperage on the 12v Rail. :)
