I know nothing really about the current phone market.

A relative wants to get a new phone, I'm probably going to sign them up to a one month rolling contract or 12 month sim only deal to get the best bang for buck on their minutes, but I still need to get them a phone.

Currently they're with vodafone so it would be handy to get one from them to avoid unlocking hassle unless I can get it for a good deal elsewhere and unlock it.

Only use is for making calls, texting and taking photos. A large screen would be a bonus.

Not necessary is web access, music playback, games etc.

Rough budget of £50 for the phone.

What would you all recommend?
Thanks!

If they can stretch to £99 then take a look at the Orange San Francisco (can be unlocked easily and free). Else there's much of muchness between phones around the £50 budget so it's probably best if they just go into a shop and choose whichever feels most comfortable or whatever they're used to.

Yeah, I was thinking that. I've seen a couple of threads on HotUKDeals for the San Fran and saw the thread on it in here when I came into this forum this afternoon (first time in this section).

They really don't need a smartphone though, which is why I was thinking if they could get one with a half decent camera for half the price then it would be worth it, the £50 saved would probably cover 3 months worth of line rental on a £15 per month sim only deal. It's not like their without money or anything, but I don't want to encourage them to spend double their 'budget' to get a smartphone if it may be too much hassle for them to handle. Do the android phones tend to crash much? The san fran looked a bit laggy in some vids I saw and so I'm thinking perhaps a decent 'normal' phone vs a cheap smartphone?

Perhaps your right about them just popping in and copping a feel of what's on offer.

I wouldn't recommend a cheap touchscreen phone. I've been there - and won't be doing so again! :P Nokia C3?

Hmm...C3 could work. Looking at Nokia's site though there's two

First one could work if she's used to the blackberry style, but the second one has a much better camera however I can't seem to see if for sale in the UK.

First one is £70 too, if they're cool with the qwerty then it could work...but it's edging close to the £100 san fran price. The second version is probably more expensive but I can't find it.

Do you know what the texting is like on the san fran screen? Anything like iphone or more difficult due to the type of screen?

Typing is a doddle on the San Fran, plus there are many different keyboards to choose from on Android so you can pick the one that best suits you, personally i find the default android keyboard perfect.

The San Fran has a Capacitive touchscreen just like the iPhone.
