Spec ME a Californian rental car + route

Cadillac STS or similar for ~£260 from 16th Oct - 26th.

Mustang was more plus really couldn't be bothered messing around with luggage on back seats and the roof. Lets hope i get the STS and not some Kia barge!

So, a brief overview...

Had trouble with the online Hertz booking as I left it to the last minute, so just booked over the phone. Went for a compact as I couldn't get the quidco cashback, ended up with a Chevy HHR clown-car when I flew into LA. Next time, Mustang...

Headed to Santa Barbara as as soon as I got the car, to stay with friends. We went to some dive bars that night, and checked out the town the next day. Nice town. Saw Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue) walk by on State Street, and met (;)) Jim Carrey's daughter in the James Joyce the following evening. Bizarre... :)
Got blamed for bringing the rain, thunder and lightening to SB by my friends. Heard an English accent at Natural Burger, but didn't ask if it was an OcUKer - he told me a (winged) bird was stealing chips from my plate when I went inside to get water. Was it you, Rich L?

Drove along the coast to SF. Weather dry but foggy/misty, so saw very few impressive views :( Did the 17 mile drive.

San Fransisco was great but met up with friends and did minimal tourist stuff, more bars and restaurants. Sea lions were entertaining. Could've spent another week there :) Some wet weather too.

Then it was on to Yosemite (stayed in Midpines, ~23 miles away, great drive up Highway 140 if you can do it). Yosemite was beautiful, walked up to Nevada Falls. Loved it. Snow on Tioga Pass, so went to Sequoia & Kings Canyon next. Stayed outside Bakersfield, then drove through Death Valley to Vegas, which I wasn't so keen on, I imagine it would be great with mates though. Did the WWII package at the Gun Store :) Drove to Grand Canyon South Rim via Hoover Dam. Drove to Malibu and stayed at my mates' folks before flying home from LA. 2524 miles driven in total, only stopped for speeding once. Fine pending...

Erm........

Might have accidentally booked flights back to California for £300 with Air NZ, leaving in just under 2 weeks. Well the actual cost to me is £150 return as the other half has a nice work discount to use :D:D:D

Time to stash some pennies for the next rental car, most likely the Mustang as I would love to compare it to the simply sublime Sebring Convertible and get a good comprative review up. Vette seems a little out of reach at about $1000 though, but I might just be tempted to get it for part of the trip.

Who said flights were expensive this year? :D

It's alright, done this trip before, see the start date of the thread :D

Will be nice to have another hire car like the Mustang and maybe the vette for a bit. Need to start the calculations and check prices on Hertz as we willl be using them, very good service and price last time.

You suck. So jealous :(

Want to go back but having to go to Florida instead :(

Haha, it was a mental evening last night as we jumped on the deal quickly, then suddenly realised we have a 2 week trip to plan in about a week or so. But teh efficient lady has planned it already although i'm trying to squeeze in another detour from Vegas to Death Valley before driving to Santa Barbara the following day.

Florida will be epic as well, something different. I have friends over there at the same time we fly out and friends over in Cali. it seems people are leaving the UK to get away this early April.

Easy for me as I left my job 3 weeks ago so just enjoying myself, whilst applying to a few jobs!

We did it the other way, form SF to Vegas in a Sebring convertible.

Did 2 overnights on the leisurely cruise, one night at the Yosemite View Lodge and the other at the Death Valley Ranch. Awesome trip and we arrived in Vegas nice and early and quite refreshed.

The Sebring wasn't actually that bad. Although in no way speedy, we were in no hurry to get anywhere and had a great few hours of comfortable top down driving.
