....that is ******* reliable!

I've had it with my Corsa C cost me £200 earlier this month on a gear linkage and is about to cost me £800 on a control unit. To this end I intend to be part exchanging it for something a little bit bigger (i.e. not a 3 door).

Was looking for recommendations as to what make I should go for. I've heard that fords are quite good, specifically focus's.

Any other ideas?

Ford Mondeo's are meant to be fantastic cars when it comes to reliability.

Gonna have to recommend Saab's though, they are known for their reliability :)

Mind you, providing you look after a car, it should keep going anyway :), but all cars need tlc etc.

Had two VW Golfs in the past one was a 1994 and the other a 2000 - only ever had the alternator go on the 1994 golf so pretty reliable in my eyes.

Mini's get my vote, most of the R53 Facelifts are decent... you can pick up a Cherished ONE with all the dealer bits and peices for about 10k..

Or a new R56 for around 12-15k

Another vote for Saab here, I've bought mine second hand and abuse it constantly. Still goes after 2-3 months.

This might not seem like a lot but you haven't seen how badly I abuse my car.

Depends though with Saabs, I have a relative who had a 9000 and a 9-3 Had a few problems with the 9-3 but the 9000 was good.
I also had another relative who had the GM-based 900 and while it was lovely in terms of the inside, it had some reliability issues. Starter went, alternator failed, power steering pump died and some of the pipes started leaking, suspension wore out, all kinds of stuff in the space of a couple of years - had about 50,000 on it when the problems started.
I'd reccomend a Honda Civic, I don't know anyone who's had one of those and any serious problems other than one person's gearbox wearing out at a shade over 170,000.

Thanks for all the input guys. Really appreciate it :)

As for budget I'm going to ring round some car dearlers in a bit and see how much they will part-ex for it. I'm hoping that they'll give me a figure somewhere around 2k and I can afford an extra 1k on top of that. Not really much to play with I know. Btw, I'm looking at used cars only will never buy a new one coz of the horiffic depreciation.

What are your opinions on Austin Minis? I'm thinking buy one, strip it down and do it up a load i.e. bucket seats, nice ICE, new dash, alloys obviously and a nice black paint job lol. :D

Ford Focus seems a wise choice. :)

Don't go French..
Doesn't always ring true. Our administrator at work has spent more in repairs on her 51 plate Focus in the 5 months since she bought it than I have on my 306 in 2 3/4 years.

I'd sadly agree with the 'don't go french' I had to drive my mates Citroen Picasso the other day - god it was horrible. It looked cheap, fealt cheap, and just generally was horrid - what's worse was that it was a brand new car and he'd spent around 20k on it.
