Spec me a chunky, solid oak king size bed

Get one made would be a little bit more expensive but last longer and look better.

Would take a good chippy about 6 hours to make up a solid oak bed if he has the plans to work off if he has to do them himself it will cost a hell of a lot more.

Does the bed need to be able to come apart for future transport because being a joiner i class solid oak bed as being oak dowelled as well. Nothing hurts more than seeing a oak bed ruined with bolts and screws everywhere holding it together.

Ring some furniture makers or joiners local to you and get some quotes.

Cheers for this, I'd not considered to this level in terms of how it goes together - which does add another problem - two sets of awkward dog legged stairs to go up with limited head room on the first set. I agree though, dowels do look loads better, but this would mean taking to roof off to get it in!

Thanks for the advice though

i just bought a new bed and mattress from monster beds, theyre rubbish, weak and thin `sprung` slats that dont last long (they straighten rather than being bowed then they split then they snap) beds really basic and cheaply made, headboard is apart of the bed, its the rear feet yet the amount it moves back and forth at the top is unreal, we chose a foam mattress rather than a conventional one and its equally as pap, so thin we can feel the two bars under it.

this was in a `sale` marked down from £600 so thought it was a decent bed. wrong.

definitely spend £600/£700 plus and avoid sprung slats like the plague. sounds like you know what you want though so wont end up dissapointed like me.

Bad times! I've wasted money on two Ikea beds, and those awful foam style mattresses, god they're so crap! Both were for guest rooms, but personally I'd avoid Ikea for beds in future, we now like to call these "emergency beds" lol

our one has got bolts which is a shame but what you gonna do, you dont want it delivered on a crane lorry do you.

Give it some thought and getting it mad by a joiner then delivered in bits is the best way.

Forget the rest:
