currently have a Canon IXUS 70.

i am disappointed by the amount of noise in pictures at anything above ISO200. which means night shots look rubbish IMO (Although i am unfairly comparing to a 40D with F2.8 IS lens!)

i am looking for a camera with similar dimensions, i.e. pocket size for nights out. but better ISO performance in particular. although looking for all round improvements as i will use this camera when i cant be bothered lugging the 40D and rucksack full of lenses around etc.

so 6MP+ and some level of manual control is also preferable. also keen on canon's as have had a few and get on with the control / buttons etc. also have a nice 8GB SDHC card to put in it, so would prefer to avoid buying another big memory card.

suggestions pls.

Fuji F31 or whatever replaced it (F40/41?) is the best you'll get for compact and high ISO

Don't think any of the compact Canon's have particularly noteworthy high ISO performance really, not above or beyond that of your current IXUS at any rate.

It's been discontinued so it's hard to get, and most places which have it are selling it for a high price. I've just bought a F40FD to will post some test shots when it arrives.

Exact same answer here! was after the F31fd but there just not easy to get hold of now, so went for the F40fd, not got A/S priority for for P&S I wouldnt really use it much, shots taken where your thinking about that id use my DSLR, its got the currently best image quality for a compact bar the f31 due to its 1/1.6 sensor and reasonbly low 8mp compared to others, also it IS better than the F31 in good day light, due to higher mp count, and more detail, but not as good in low light (while still better than more others)

If you look around it can also be had for £100 which is very reasonable

Get the F31D if you can, its the best of the lot of the F series. They tried to follow the ' more pixels are better' crowd and it didnt work, you get better and sharper from the F31D - imo.

I've got the F31fd. Absolutely love it. Only slight downside is the xD cards which are more expensive than SD.

Didn't know it was discontinued though, shame. They probably go second hand for a premium on the bay these days then. I paid £125 last August.

Still check the rest of the Fuji range. Probably the F40 is a good idea

I have a f40fd.

It seems very good in low light. However you can still see noise reduction on very low ISO's in daylight when you blow it up to full size. The only difference is it doesn't get too bad at high ISOs.

It can also take SD cards as well as xD cards IIRC.

Overall I'm very happy with it. I can't compare it with the f31fd though because I've never had any experience with one.
