Spec me a cool bass riff

The old chestnut.
I only allow my bass player to play one song without a pick and thats Run To the Hills because theres no way he can do it with a pick.
I can walk in a room and immediately hear a band where the bass player uses a pick because they are usually tight and smack in time with the drummer.
Finger players are usually flying around the drummer and as soon as they use a pick for the odd song it all falls back in place again.
And yes, my bass player is really good and during rehearsals plays stuff by him out of Primus its just that our band requires a pick player.

Anyway, depending what type of band you're in I reckon For Whom The Bells Toll by Metallica should do the trick.

you shouldn't be so stereotypically, i think a lot of bassists play finger style because it is a more natural method of playing bass. Being able to actually feel the strings is a lot more intuitive than just banging them with a bit of plastic. Plus I think the tone from finger style is a lot better, a lot softer.
I will say however that picks do give a very nice tone if you're playing punk, metal and some forms of rock, the clangy sound of a pick makes it a lot easier for yourself to be heard and that's important as people move to the bass line.

I've played with my fingers for so long now that it's actually impossible for me to play with a pick, especially considering im a dedicated 6 string player and I have to palm mute all the low strings when playing on the treble side

I'm far from being stereotypical and you just agreed with me where a pick sounds better.

Maxwell Murder - Rancid

Matt Freeman's bass solo in that is pretty good (sent a rather large shiver down my spine seeing it live, and no, I don't want his babies :p)

I would go as far assaying that Matt Freeman is one of the most talented bass players around at the moment. But to be fair, I'm not particulary well read on bass guitarists :).

Matt Freeman's bass solo in that song is probably the most impossible bass solo someone could try to play, it's so hard i just like to think the song doesn't exist :)

Donna Lee and Teen Town pale in comparison to that bass solo

If groovy bass tunes is the topic of the day all this talk of muse and no hyper music? Its gorgeously danceble, nice simple but defo effective. :D Worth a listen (groove is a gooden aswell)
