Spec me a ..... Diabetes test meter thingy for blood sugar level

I'd suggest going to one of the diabetic forums for this info. I've used meters for the last 16 odd years (I'm a type I diabetic) and to me they are all pretty much the same. It is the lancing device I'm most interested in not the meter. I love my softclick II and it has out lived many meters. I know from talking with other diabetics that don't get strips via prescription that Abbott are willing to sell to the public fairly cheap. I think strip cost is the main thing you should look at.

I don't think there is any harm in using one but agree he should go to his GP.

Pretty much this Raymond. Facebook me if you have any questions as I am seeing my DS next week.

My recommendation would be to forget about blood test monitors due to price, and instead go for a pack of urine test strips.

Blood test:
1) £10-40 for the meter, plus £10-20 for 50 test strips, plus £10 for 100 lancets.
2) test strips have use by date, and if you only test a couple of times a month, they will run our before you use them all.

Urine test:
1) £4-15 for 100 test strips which also test for other issues as well. They do run out but not wasting as much money.
2) reading could be from since you last peed so not as up to date as blood.

A friend of mine is diabetic and regularly (usually before eating or when he feels funny) takes a blood test so he knows how much insulin to inject. It's sensible if you're dependent on it to keep track of how your body is doing. A few of my friends in thr past have injected too much or not enough.

Dumbest thing I have ever read to be honest. Being aware of your body and its changes is really important, especially where conditions like diabetes are concerned.

I only went to my doctor because I developed symptoms that, when I looked them up on Google, indicated I might have had a problem. Lo and behold, my blood sugars were at 17 and I was diagnosed with type 2.

And this is so dangerous.
If you knew you had problems there is no need to go to Dr Google but just head straight to your GP.
What if you had put your symptons into Google and it told you that you might have cancer or a brain tumour?
Believe me, working in a hospital I hear of many cases of self diagnosis and people arguing with Consultants because Dr Google knows best.
My GP earlier this year actually asked me if I had looked up my symptoms to something else I went in with and was surprised I said no because lots of people go in already thinking they know what's wrong.
I've just looked up "Sudden loss of sight" and if I'd read some of Dr Google's replies I would have been bricking myself.

If you had been able to read your computer screen with sudden loss of sight, I think your doctor might have questioned that ;)

There is a big difference between self-diagnosing and self-medicating or treating. I had minor symptoms all of which were negligible on there own but together suggested something more serious. It was this checking on google that prompted me to see my GP.

Basically I was drinking shed loads of water and going to the loo far more than previously; in itself not serious enough to warrant a visit to the doctor at the time but then another symptom presented itself and I started to get a little concerned. I made an appointment with the doctor and got diagnosed.

For you to say you don't even know what the symptoms are of your condition is stage one of not managing the condition properly.

a forum is no substitute for medical advice .... from a qualified source. there may well be medically qualified people on here but you dont know who they are . ask your gp like i said we use the accutrend from roche but ask your gp what one they use ?
