Spec me a dog

One vote for the lurcher!

Mine died 2 weeks ago and she was the absolute best dog I've ever come across.

Friendly, lazy as hell, don't mind being left while you're at work/out for a few hours, equally excited about going for long walks or just to a field to run round in a circle for 10 minutes, then flake out for the rest of the aft...

What mix you get and how much greyhound they have in, determines their size. Tess was just above knee height.

How on earth is he going to know how to raise a potentially dangerous dog correctly when he's asking for help about how to pick one on a computer forum?

And "as long as it's brought up correctly" is a ridiculous phrase for 90% of the dog owning population, which to be brutally frank, aren't capable of raising a spider plant correctly. Another vote for licenses here.

I agree with the licenses part. Though how it would be implemented is quite difficult to figure out. Would you have to go on a course and then take a test?

It'd hopefully just be background checks.

License is the way to bring in a ban too. So I'm in favour of a license. Once it's licensed then you just announce a stop on further licenses which means family pets aren't affected, but no more arrive.

Criminal record? No license.
Cause problem with the dog? No license for a new one.
Etc.

I've met more border collies that I'd class as a danger to the public then the supposed 'chav dogs'

Any dog can be dangerous you fool. It's ignorant comments like this and people jumping on the bandwagon that give breeds a bad name.
The thing is there are scumbags out there who will buy a staffy because they think it makes them look tough.

I just want them banned. I don't give a toss that shotguns are perfectly safe if handled correctly, I don't want people having them. I don't want family pets taken away, I just don't want any new ones arriving.

Stop and think for a moment. If labrador's were raised by 'hoodies' to be nasty, fighting dogs which carried a status symbol as a tough breed, a weapon dog if you please, would you also want them banned? Are you so gullible to believe that only staffys bite humans? Are you aware the majority of dog attacks go unreported because they are not newsworthy.? I believe the hate campaign is media driven because it sells newspapers. Nobody wants to hear about a child being bitten by a labrador (or other classic 'family' dog).

Overall, Staffordshire Bull Terriers have friendly, gentle dispositions and make lovely companions for many types of households. Praised for its "nanny-like" instincts, the Stafford gets along remarkably well with children when properly trained and socialized. However, because of this breed's strong prey drive and dog fighting ancestry, use caution around other pets. If raised together, well-trained and closely supervised, they may even learn to get along beautifully. While not ideal as guard dogs for the home, this breed will protect people from harm. The Stafford is very loyal and tends to bond closely with its owner. If you are active, patient and ready to provide plenty of one-on-one affection to your dog, the Stafford could be the dog breed for you.

....however if you are a burberry wearing chav no doubt the dog will be trained to be aggressive, unruly and potentially dangerous.

ANY dog with a full set of teeth has the potential to be dangerous in the wrong hands. By all means call for a license for ALL dogs but please research your statements before making wild innaccurate assumptions.

Ban the owners responsible not the breed.

Don't do it! If you own a cat and you enjoy the cat then keep it at that.

A dog while much pleasure is to gain it isn't too far off from having a child!

But anyway..

I hope you in enjoy the permaban.

Mondeo?

Seriously though, Border Terrier.

Had ours from new, pre-registered, only one previous owner.

Never had any bother with him, in his 13 years, we only once had to take him to the vets, and that was for fleas, well, twice, unfortunately, the second time was to have him put down (but that's a story i'd rather not retell).

Although some say terriers can be a bit...nippy, we found that was only when he was young. Got him we I was 5, and being a puppy, loved having someone to play with. So, I basically grew up with him, then, my brother was born when I was 12, so, the dog was 7 at the time, so to introduce a new born baby into the house, was a bit sketchy. But, even at 7 (quite old for a Border), he was golden with my baby brother. Never once bit anyone, growled a few times out of panic or shock when my brother jumped on him, but never bit out.

Borders require minimal grooming due to the wirely nature of their fuzz. About once or twice a year to the trimmers. Other than that, i don't really know what to say (*scrolls up to see essay* oops :p)

Plus, mine let you do stuff like this...

Also, how could you say no to a face like this...

As for the dangerous dogs discussion, there is no such thing as a dangerous breed, only dangerous owners. Even poorly trained dogs can usually be retrained, you can evidently teach an old dog new tricks.

I can understand the consideration that in the worst case scenario where your dog does attack someone/something you'd think the stronger/bigger breeds might do more damage, but I don't think it's a valid point. Obviously when you're talking about giant dogs you need to be conscious that they could be stronger than you i.e. you couldn't pull them away from something, but beyond that I'd say it's irrelevant.
