Spec me a family car for £6k please

Tottally agree with fox on this one. Of the 2 big pricey jobs that could need doing on this 1 has already been taken care of. Its a good shout that mondeo
I'm hoping that Fox was being sarcastic. How is £6k throwaway money? Also, the fact that it's had a new clutch and flywheel would suggest that it's either not motorway use and is in fact a minicab, or it's been abused/remapped. Also, on a two year old car, they only list it as 'service history' rather than FFSH or just FSH at the least.

I think its a load of crap, proper bargain basement stuff. I can has foglights please?

This is it, the general concensus around here seems to be that your always better off with the latest model, regardless because it gives you more. In this case, you're getting a lot lot more in the mk3 and getting it cheaper too.

Yes, I appreciate the thinking of "why spend x when you can get one for y", but it's 5-6k not 20. And for that, you can afford a mint highly specced older model or a lowly specced new one..... Seems like a no brainer to me. To spend much less, he's going to get something lower spec, that's not had the final facelift and probably wont be in as good nick.

He doesn't need a diesel, which puts him nicely in the highly specced, lower mileage, well looked after petrol market

It's not now but after say 4 years if you bin it (which you won't as it will still have a value) its cost you just over a grand a year in depreciation. That's cheap motoring.

You would need to make sure its not an ex taxi mind.

That Edge estate is extraordinary value for the money.

2 year old car for £5.5k? That's a lot of car for the money if you're after space and don't need performance.

Mk3s just look really dated now. It was never a great design in the first place but they just look old.
