Hi all
A friend has around £2000 to spend on a new gaming machine (tower only).
We were looking at the Asus STRIKER for the mobo but if there is a better option please feel free to change that.
Also a Seagate 500gb 16mb HDD
CPU will be a C2D, dont think quad core is necessary, and a single 8800GTX.
High quality case needed aswell.

Make me drool :D

This is way underbudget. You could afford to go for another GTX for which I'd go to a larger PSU but as it this would do very nicely.

With the extra money you could afford to go to water cooling, another GPU (as mentioned), more disks, sound card, or anything else really.

Assuming we wont be overclocking..is the E6700 not worth the extra over the E6600?
Not overclocking? Don't you know it's illegal to not overclock a C2D? :eek: :p

Not overclocking such an expensive rig is a bit silly. You pay all this money to get the most premium components, components built to overclock like mad. Then you sentence them to a life of running at stock. You could have paid much less and gotten the same performance.

Just out of curiosity . . What screen is he using? And what mouse? Coz if you are gaming, theres a world of difference between adequate and good.

I'm not sure about the monitor actually, probably an old one so I get him to include that in the budget.

You really ought to think about going for the Q6600, brilliant price now. With that much money to spend it seems silly to buy an E6600. I'm in the process of putting together a computer for roughly the same amount and I regret getting the E6600 now that the Q6600 is such a reasonable price.

e6600= £178.59 inc vat
q6600= £375.99 inc vat

Personally I'd say it really isn't worth the extra, probably better to spend it on a better Monitor, or Peripherals.

Ye actually scratch what I just said, have been doing some research on the Q6600 and where it actually makes a difference and Tarty is right, really isn't worth twice the amount of the E6600 at the moment.

thanks for the specs guys, got a better idea of what to get now. Will post back with the spec we decide on soon for opinions :>

imo i would get quad core, games in the future will make use of it, and games like Supreme commander really need it for really really big battles (2000+ unit sort of battles)
