I'm looking into joining a gym in the next couple of weeks, and have loads near me so I'm a bit spoilt for choice. Within a couple of miles there's Esporta, Greens and Virgin Active and a bit further afield there's a uni gym which I could get alumni membership to for about £30pm (my Dad's a lecturer). Most gyms don't seem to be upfront about prices or T&Cs which is irritating to say the least so I'm after a bit of feedback. Requirements are;

1) £30pm or less.
2) No minimum contract (most important thing) since I'll be off to uni in September and don't want to be paying for a gym I won't use when I can get cheap student membership.

I've only heard bad things about Virgin's customer service but their facilities look top notch and it is the closest one to me so if anyone is a member at one of their gyms it'd be interesting to know how you get on.

Cheers. :)

go and look at each gym that you are considering, go when you plan to train so that you can see how busy it is.

Good thinking, I'll either be going late evening, 8pm+, or in the morning depending on what hours I'm working so can't imagine it'll be too busy round then but definitely worth a check

i think you are mistaken - evening and mornings are the peak times - for the same reason as you most likely -- work!

I work in a sports centre and we have loads of different gym memberships so im sure big company will have flexible ones for when you go off to uni. There must be some sort of pay and go one where you have an induction and payper visit instead of being tied infor a year?

Is one of the gyms near where you want to go to uni as you would then be albe to use the membership both when you are home and at uni?

after 8pm i find most gyms start to wind down.
5-7 would be peak evening times

My gym is pretty much dead after 8 so all the staff come down at those times!!

Late morning 9 - 1 you get all the housewives and early mornings is the oldies and peopel b4 they go to work.

Got a day trial at Esporta tomorrow, gonna take my kit down and have a look round. Literally 10 mins drive away which is good.

From what I read though they ask for a 12 month minimum contract which isn't an option for me, and they're also meant to be really expensive.

esporta centres are fabulous though - other gyms won't compare really but the cost is ridiculous.

the problem with gyms is they act like giving you their pricing is like telling you osama's location. i know they just want to close sales but i wish you could get a straight answer dammit!

Plan is to take advantage of their facilities then get them to be as straight as possible about pricing otherwise I'm out of there.

Checked out Virgin and Esporta today- surprisingly Esporta were cheaper since they currently have a free joining fee offer (though there is a £15 admin charge) and a student rate of £44pm any time compared to Virgin's £50 joining fee and £42.95 pm. I know I said £30pm but I'm seeing that it's not very realistic.

I really preferred Esporta's facilities too, the pool was a bit smaller but the gym area was much nicer, and there was a smaller weights area upstairs which also had treadmills and things away from the 30 something mums barely breaking sweat on cross trainers. :p

just run up and down stairs and punch large hanging pieces of meat in a cooling meathouse

Or, according to a member on another forum called 'Supermum' do this:

"Why the hell pay to go to a gym in the first place? Go for a long, brisk walk on the seafront instead. Get lots of fresh air instead of the odour of many overworked unwashed bodies, and if you feel you simply must build up your biceps, take along a couple of baked bean tins and swing your arms as you walk."

Had my first session at Esporta today, really enjoyed it and their equipment is top notch so definitely get what you pay for. Just gives me less beer money which is a good thing.
