As title really, I would like a BDROM drive for my HTPC, but seen as you can buy pretty much any HD DVD ever made for pennies I want a combo drive that will play HD DVDs too. Cheapest that provides the best functionality for BDROMs and will atleast play HD DVD films too.

Recomendations for HD DVD and BDROM Codecs are welcome too!

Cheers

I got an LG one in August for my birtday. Nice little drive. Plays HD and BR, also comes with codecs, which is always a plus!

I heard there were problems with powerdvd and using both hd-dvd and blu-ray. The bundled version with the LGs is 7.x, which iirc can do hd-dvd but sometimes has problems with blu-ray. The new version of powerdvd has removed hd-dvd playback, so no help there.

I'd actually like a solution to this, I saw perhaps you can modify powerdvd 8 to support hd-dvd, but looked like a bit of a bodge, as i've ordered myself the lg hd-dvd/blu-ray player for crimbo.

So, any alternative software that works with hd-dvd and blu-ray for this drive and is updated to support new titles?

I've got the LG one, for the simple reason it could play both formats, especially since I'd bought a load of cheap HD-DVD's :p

I found that the powerdvd 7 software didn't work when I first installed it, It work run my HD-DVD's but wouldn't play any blu-ray stuff. I found I had to update it to a newer version, and so far I haven't had any problems, it plays all my blu-ray and HD-DVD's perfectly.

If you don't get on well with the powerdvd software, as some have found out, I've heard that anydvd is the way to go.
