I used to be into this... I spent an absolute fortune on kit though. Might get back into it when I retire. I think there's a certain something about talking to someone on the other side of the planet with a transceiver and antenna that's much more satisfying than "oh, hai" on the internetz ;)

These days I play (or try to play) the Piano for my fun :) Highly recommend it, but it's a lot of hard work.
 
Climbing is quite a good hobby, you don't need a huge amount of equipment to start with as you can hire the shoes, harnesses etc. Unfortunately it's not always that cheap a hobby, I think it was around £10 each time for me, admittedly you do get up to four hours at the wall but usually by the time 90 minutes or two hours was up I was completely done and could barely grip anything. You may also find that there aren't many suitable locations near you, for me living in South East London it's a pain to get to any walls so I haven't been since I moved down here.
