I need two, one to go onto the back of the main computer (with the router) and another to go onto my computer in my room.

What type of thing would you recommend?

Budget is around £80. Thanks.

Depends what you plan to use the connection for.. You could either go for 2*85mb homeplugs for around £50, or 2*200mb for around £120.. I've got the devolo 200mb ones and they are fine - however it will cost me a lot to add another machine on to the network - not so if I had the 85mb version.

If all you need is streaming stuff and the occasional file transfer I'd probably go for the 85mb version.

Search for eConnect homeplug, they are about £22 each, much cheaper if you buy 4 or 5, ive been installing them for loads of my customers and they are some of the best 85meg homeplugs ive used, im amazed more people dont stock em, failing that MSI do a good twin pack for under £50 which is great. you dont need to spend 80 on 2 plugs, in fact you might get 2 x eConnect 200mb ones for that but ive not used them so its your call

How can i find out how fast our connection is to see if i need 85mb or 200mb?

Il be using it for gaming mostly.

I will be plugging it into the back of a 54mps cable/dsl netgear router.

Also i heard it only works with ADSL routers not cable?

The devalo ones are double the price though. =[

54mb/s is the wireless speed all routers are either 10/100 (100mb) or 100/1000 (gigabit).

If you are mainly sharing the internet and not moving disk images or other large (>1Gb) files then get 85mb.

Over 85mb HP i can transfer a 700meg DIVx movie in roughly 2-3 mins, with 108meg wireless this takes about 5-8 mins and on standard 100meg Cat5 cable about 1-2mins.

Dont really want it for tranfering files.

Can somone just verify with me that i can use a homeplug even though my router is cable router not adsl?

As long as you are using Ethernet from the router to the PC (or PC to PC) then the HomePlugs will work, as they just use the mains to transfer the ethernet signal around to the other HomePlugs.

Am quite happily using 2xDevolo av200's here to connect router to HTPC
