Spec me a knife set

Save your money and build up a set of globals.
You will never need to buy another knife set again, nor will your kids, or your grandkids.

Globals are the way to go my freind.

Global knives are lovely but the metal handle and feel of them certainly isn't to everyones taste. I much prefered my housemates wusthof set.

Wusthof Trident and Sabatier are the only knives I ever used during my chefing days.

Sabatier knives have come down in proce over the last few years also. Wusthof are styled similar to sabatier but I think are better weighted / balanced

Buy a cheap one and learn to use a steel correctly.

Then buy a good knife ;)

maybe you don't even need a knife block, I bought a fairly decent block, as well as an extra (decent) japanese chefs knife. I tend to find I use this single knife for everything (except cutting bread!) and the block of knives remains dormant, occasionally used instead of giving my chefs knife a wash or rinse.

have a look in TK maxx, they often have really decent cookware at daft prices. a lot of henckels, stellar, global etc at daft prices. may be able to build our own block collection, unless you want them to match etc.

and yea, globals are not the 'best' just have the 'best' brand awareness. they're often jumped to as the best, but there are better.
