I'm looking to build a new PC & as the title says I have £1350. Can anyone make any recommendations for me? I only need the box and I'm hoping to get something that will play FPS (would like to play FEAR without any problems, and any games coming out in the next year or two) and RTS games (C&C3, CoH) well at 1920 X 1200 res with all the bells and whistles and a decent frame rate.

I already have a 24" Dell (2405fpw) monitor, a keyboard, mouse and speakers so all I need is the box. I already have Windows XP or would it be worth switching to Vista now?

I'd also like to stick with Intel as the CPU & Nvidia as the GFX card cos I've heard they're the best ones at the moment compared to the ATI cards

As regards a case I've been looking at the Akasa Eclipse 62 cos I've heard that has good thermal performance but after that I'd appreciate any help.

thanks,

Raelthorne

Not got enough time to spec you up, but two things is will say;

1. Stick with XP for the time being, Vista isn't the best OS for gaming at the moment :p.

2. I have the Akasa case, excellent in every respect apart from the fact that most of today's large PSU's don't fit in very well, I had to perform some DIY on the case to get a Tagan 560w in.

My attempt:

I have chosen the E2160 because given a month the Quad core price drops will be here, which will be at the same price as the current dual core processors and even penryns will be here sometime this year, you can overclock the E2160 to a higher clockrate so you can play FEAR and many other games you currently have.

8800gts 640mb was just to skimp £120 instead of the GTX which you can take the GTX if you like but you will see why i recommended it you later. Taken into consideration you would probably get a better performance out of the GTX which would just be down to what you decide to go for.

Now proably Q4 the new x38 chipset will be out and that means pci-express 2, DDR3 and 45nm processor support (+1333fsb). and also the end of this year will be folloed by penryn 45nm processor and the Nvidia G92 and ati R670 (i think).

now if you want games to be supported for the next few years then i would propose that you save up and wait if your current system is doing what you want it to do, but if you are in desperate need of a new set up then i would go with something like stated in this post.

at a later date when the new Quad cores come down in price and G92 is out you can sell your E2160 and 8800 gts/gtx for a fair bit to go towords the new parts, that is if you plan on making the upgrade.

Reality bite, games like bioshock will probably push the 88xx series to its limits meaning low performance (especiallyon your 24" monitor) so for such a high resolution gaming performance with lots of eye candy and no frame drops i would personally get a cheap system if you are in desperate times.

regards, sinny.

If the Akasa has problems with some of the psu's what other cases would you recommend?

not heard of the akasa having any probs with any psu's?

can't go wrong with akasa or lian-li really.

Hmmm, well to be honest, if it comes to it, I'd rather have Bioshock on my Xbox 360, however I am now concerned by this PCI-Express 2 thing. Last time i built a PC I had AGP, DDR & Socket 478. Which quickly left me in trouble cos S775, DDR2 and PCI-Express came out. Hence now i have to do a complete upgrade.

I'm planning on waiting the month or two for the price drop on the processors, it was my original idea to wait for the E6600/700/800 to drop in price but I'll keep an eye on the Quad cores as well. I intend for this PC to last another three years!

thanks for your suggestions so far, keep them coming!

:)
