Right need to set up a pool tournament for 20 people.

2 Tables for 2.5hours.

Whats the best strucutre to ensure we end up with a winner and everyone gets a decent amount of games?

What are the standards of the people playing? If the average time for a game is <10 minutes then you might want a different structure to those who aren't so quick at finishing. Also how serious is this meant to be, if it's a group of mates then I'd probably just do a round robin style as below where everyone keeps tally of wins and losses.

One fairly obvious way to do it is split into two teams of ten, so each player gets twelve minutes per game for the first hour, then pair off the top five from table one to the top five from table two for the second hour and the bottom five from table one play the bottom five from table two at the same time. Final half hour is for the top five from the "winners" group (who at this point have won two games each) to have a brief knockout tournament across the two tables.

I'm sure there's a better way of doing it as some people won't play each other at all and you'll have some waiting around/drinking time for the losers towards the end but that's my first thought.

good luck with 20 people in two half hrs :D

unless its one frame winner with world rules and standard is decent you might get it done. thing is over one frame means nothing and anyone whos decent can win against anyone in world over one frame.

i would suggest either more time or more tables.

hmmm I'd say 1 game of pool on average (if everyone playing can actually play pool) should take around 5 mins. So 2 tables and 150 mins means you will get around 60 games. Let's be realistic and say some games take more then 5 mins, I would say you are looking at around 40-50 games being played within that timeframe...

If you manage to get around 40 games in I would go for 4 rounds swiss tournament. Everyone gets 4 games, you get a winner. (Well might be 2 at same points, but then just have a playoff game for 1st).

If you're slow you might have to go for the single elimation brackets tourney.

Lock the doors, make sure everyone has a Cue, sock and a ball each.

last man standing, loser mops up the blood. Will be over in a lot less than 2h so no worries.

I think as long as everyone gets a few games and we end up with a winner it will all be good.

Going to have to put some thought into it though

4 groups of 5, everyone in each group plays everyone = 40 games

Then either the winners of each group go through to semi-finals = 3 more games

Or top two of each group go through to quarters = 7 more games.

My uni pool society just put peoples names down in random order, then go for a single-elimination knockout tournament. Only problem with this is if you lose 1 game you're out and have to watch. Very easy to just get going, although I'd love to see double elimination knockout or something implemented to give the losers a chance to fight back!
