...for my mum.

ok ok not the best of starts, but I'll fill you in on the criteria.

Light, without costing the moon

Gears, no more than six (perhaps three, like them old fashioned hub gears) or none at all.

Folding.

Price, (the limiting factor) ~ £150, certainly no more. Having had a quick google I think she's going to be **** out of luck.

OK, she's a pensioner and wants a bike to give her knees a bit of exercise (don't suggest an indoor exercise thing) and to get down the road to the fields where she takes the dogs for a walk.

She's not after anything trendy or 'specialised with loads of gizmoes' (her words not mine). She did have a folding bike, but it was as heavy as my car and just as rusty :p so it went to the scrap man in the sky. She saw one of those commuter bike things recently and though it might suit the bill.

Really I'm after some suggestions as to manufacturer and perhaps any places online that we could check out as a supplier. Don't know much about bikes myself other than the lighter it is, the more expensive, roughly speaking.

Ta.

This is literally the first thing I found after Googling (not recommending necessarily), so do your own research as well, but it is on spec and on budget:

Cheers, will pass it along, see what she thinks.

lol, she did look at some of those in halfords the other day, I was getting some spare bulbs and she goes: "you know I was looking for a new bike? how about one of these, but I don't know what those things on the wheels are.".."
"Those are stunt pegs, mum, you won't be needing them...will you?"
:p
Looked into the second hand market? Some real bargains on the usual suspects (gumtree etc.)
Might be worth a look in and see. I'll ask what she thinks.

Thanks guys, good stuff so far ;)

Well, thanks for the suggestions guys. We had a look about on the internet with mum scribbling specs down on her note pad paper thing, checked out 2 or 3 actual bike shops too.

A couple of days ago I'm told to go and look in the boot of her car. She bought a 6 speed folding bike second hand for 40 quid lol. Tbh it looks just like all of the others we looked at, weighs about the same too. Doesn't look like its ever been ridden.

Not how I would have done it, but then again it would have cost a lot more. She seems happy with it so I cannot really complain. :p
