Hello all,

Any avid campers out there?
I need to buy a tent for the upcoming mongol rally, but haven't been camping in 12 years!

Requirements:

1 man
light
easy to set up!

Range of environments, from +30 to -10 (although sleeping bag will be more important here

Appreciate any help

Budget? Weight limitations?

- Pea0n

No real budget - not anything that could feed Mongolia for a month, but not a Lidl's own either!
Weight limitations - nothing in mind. Just lighter than your average bear

I really rate my Vaude, it's a 2/3 man tent but it's not overly large and provides ample room for just myself.

Absolute doddle to set up, 2 poles, slide one down the long axis and clip in, then one perpendicular across the short axis near the entrance under the other pole and clip in. It basically pops the tent up and then peg it down :) also cool as well with the inner mesh venting.

Weighs around 3kg so not really a tent to take with you when walking, but if taking it in a car I think it's pretty good. Not sure however on the temp range, but I should imagine it would cope OK.

If you have an unlimited budget take a look at the Hilleberg range. I bought a Hilleberg Nallo 2 GT last year. The Akto is a very highly rated 1 man tent weighing in at 1.5kg.

For weekend use, this sort of thing should be perfect for you. Unpack it and let go!

Weird disc shape when packed but that's no problem if you've gone in a car.
No good for the back of my bike ('cause of shape) otherwise I'd have one for weekends.Take more care with your sleeping bag though, and even a cheap roll mat will keep you warmer at night.

If you already have a cheap sleeping bag you could get a liner for it which will add another season to it's warmth rating.

If you have the urge to spend more money let me know as I have an urge to spend it for you, but this is a cheap setup that I'd choose for festivals and the like.

Me and the Missus are well geared up for our numerous camping trips each year, we have different tents for different trips (everything from a Khyam Tourer 200 to a li'l Gelert Tornado 3). So if I can be of any assistance, please ask away.

If its car just get a pop-up tent unless you stuck for space. But really they are very flat but prob about 1m in diameter. We just stick ours in the boot and pile stuff on top.

We got one that is sort of black out material. Its not very good at keeping the light out, but keeps morning sun out a bit longer.

I would look longer and harder at sleeping bags.

If you have money to splash out then maybe the Terra Nova laser tents are worth a look, however as you're looking ata car then anything by a good brand will do. However I would probably choose a tent that could withstand some high winds as the mongul rally makes me think you may end up with some, in which case I wouldn't go for some cheap tent.

If you want a popup go with the Quechua. The Hi-gear ones look and feel cheap and nasty im comparison! The Quechua 3 Second Light is pretty damn roomy for 1 person and packs up in a relatively small disc like the smaller 2 Second Lights. I couldn't really say if living in on for a month would be ideal. I have spent a week in my 2 Second Light and I survived! No car, either

I have a Vango Beta 350. Its meant for 3 people, and has a decent porch. I can comfortably put it up myself in 15 minutes. Its got plenty of room.

As for sleeping bags, I have one if these:

Expensive, but since I was camping in Kielder 3 weekends ago and it comfortably handled temps down to -8. I also use a fleece liner inside, and it is the best sleeping bag ever! It is expandable, which is why I bought it, my shoulders do not fit in normal sleeping bags! I was toasty warm and very happy I spent the £130 for that and the fleece liner!
