Spec me a torch for walking over the moors in the dark!

Night vision goggles! Torches are terrible, they make you blind to anything that isn't in the beam and they gives you away to boot. Much better to get used to the dark, not that it really ever gets pitch black.

Totally agree!!! Cannot stress this enough. When I lived in the sticks. I would walk the dog at 10pm before bed. Almost complete darkness. After 5 mins of walking you see everything fine anyway. Enough to tell whats going on.

Rather than concentrate on one spotlight.

Haha my first thought. So my addition - don't go in The Slaughtered Lamb, if you do don't make them miss at darts.

I walked into a local rural pub once where everyone just stopped talking and stared at us, I walked across the room and exclaimed in a rather loud voice "**** me, it's the Slaughtered Lamb" :D

~30 quid?

Shadow VG10!

3 modes, long run time from a few hours to a few days (max/mid/low) and shock/waterproof should you be chased by some beast into a lake or off a cliff.

Wouldn't a head torch be easier to use? An Alpkit Gamma is great and only 15 quid.
That was going to be my suggestion, unfortunately Alpkit don't have any in stock until November. I also have a Petzl Tactikka, which cost more than double, and yet isn't as good as the Alpkit one. The Alpkit is almost as bright as the "high" mode on the Fenix LD20 when you use the main XPC Cree LED, and about as bright as the "low" mode on the Fenix LD20 when you use the other white LED.

This, having done countless night hikes myself walking longer periods of time having to hold and point a torch gets old fast, get a headlamp and be done with it.

Head torches are all very well but they are not usually grey bright and they have the problem of the light being on your face so if you are anywhere with insects (the moor isn't really a problem in that respect!) tthey end up all over your face...

Op the Fenic TK20 is what I have used for a few years, bright enough for the moors (use it a bit on dartmoor) and small and light, about £50 too. Could always buy a half decent head torch too, I normally carry both when walking in the dark because both are useful (fiddling around with a camera/tripod is easier witha headtorch especially as it isn't as bright.).

Are there any UK suppliers of these torches? The links on this thread are coming back as dollars, and eBay search queries for the LD20 and TK20 are giving me Hong Kong and USA sellers. I have checked the big torch spec-me thread too, and searches like Blackshadow Darth is getting me China as well. Just wary of customs tax as I know that they sting you at the £15/£30 threshold now.

Outside of computing, why is it that everything you want in electronics, li-ion batteries, LED bulbs, Wii sensor bar, docking stations, etc are always from Hong Kong sellers?

They're cheaply sourced and distributed from over there I guess and shipping doesn't really take too long. I recall mine taking under 2 weeks!

It's a lot cheaper to buy from HK, as that is where they are made. Most stores will 'allegedly' mark the packet as gift and put a price on it below the threshold.

The Fenix LD20 was about £35 or so from HK and was more like £50 from a UK store.

Good UK store here and you get an 8% discount with the code CPF.

If you are walking dogs why not get an led head torch so you have hands free for leads and picking up the **** !

I've got one that can't have been more than 10 quid and it gives a reasonable enough light output and keeps my hands free !
