Spec me a trip to Berlin

Just thought I'd bump this to see if anyone else has more to share, as I'm thinking of doing exactly the same thing with my missus next year too.

Judging by the reputation of the public transport system I'm assuming that staying right in the centre of the city isn't necessary, as long as your fairly near a station.

i went about a month ago. and either walked or taxi everywhere so i cant really say anythign about the transpirt, but you NEED to go to midtown grill!!!

I go to Berlin a lot as i live in Hamburg, and have many friends who live there.

To the persons question above, no you dont really need to be in the city. Sbahn runs perfect, always does in Germany, and if your going at weekend its 24/7. Even if you go mid week there are night buses or taxis you know.

Get over to the East for the best nights out, i dont know how old you are or what you like but im 23 and if you like partying i can help you out ;)

EDIT - Saying that people always go to Berlin and i prefer Hamburg much much much more. Been here for nearly 2 years now living and working. Best city in the whole of Germany and a secret gem...rather happy i found it tbh :)

I've booked up. Haven't planned what we are doing yet but I can't wait!

My old man has been to Hamburg a few times with work and really rates it!

How did you end up living and working across there if you don't mind me asking?

Ye i dont mind you asking.

I finished uni, was working in England in a factory just trying to get any money. I got an ok degree, but wanted more. I was living back at home in Devon. I came back from Amsterdam after a weekend with a friend and thought to hell with all of this, I want change.

I came out here as an au'pair beleive it or not. Quit my job in England and was here 5 days later. Great way to move countries. Had everything paid for, roof over my head, 100 euro per week, travel card and lots of free time. I went job hunting, got an internship for an iphone application and the rest is history.

Im now doing my second internship but this one is going super well, and im working for a deep set marketing company doing business deals and also social building. (cheeky plug - http://www.yieldkit.com)

Got a flat, missus etc etc. Took a gamble and its paying off :)

But yes, Hamburg really is an amazing place. As said its a hidden gem, and apart from the occassional stag does you get here (which are normally only on the Reeperbahn where the prostitutes are) you dont get much else with regards to annoying tourists and stress.

Ive never even seen a fight or had any trouble. Mind im not the smallest of guys and im into pretty 'different' hobbies so dont get much trouble (most people normally think in German weirdly) but it is a place of fun, amazing amazing people, and relaxed. Couldnt recommend anywhere more and ive travelled a lot.

I lived in Berlin for over 3 years - greatest city ever IMO. I don't even know where to start telling you where to go, haha! You've been given some good advice already though!

Tacheles is sadly closing down now though and there isn't much to see anymore :(

It is a great place to live. Im not a fan of ALL of the paper work. It is actually rather incredible - the typical German way. And well German isn't an easy language, it takes time, and you have to understand a god damn lot. Im still finding it hard, but whatever, I get on ok with it.

There is nothing stopping anyone from changing there life. Try :)

It was deffo a scary thing to do. I was 21 when i left England. Pretty weird going away on your own with no ideas, but ive made my life here now.

I went to Cologne when I was younger and loved it! Germany is one of the few countries that I have visited where I could imagine living.
Couldn’t agree more with that, very enjoyable place. I have been to cologne a few times and to Gamescom which is held there, defiantly worth the trip.

I was in berlin this year when the Euros were on and Germany were playing in which I think were the quarter finals, the place was buzzing and after they won the streets were just full of people partying, really had a fantastic time. Spent all my time eating and drinking, met some fantastic people and will defiantly go back. There was a long road I remember walking down daily full of bars and restaurants which was nice, I found an Irish pub in the Europa centre too which I would defiantly go back too.

I went in February this year.

DO NOT GO AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. It was -6C during the day and -12C during the night :(
That really put a downer on the trip as it was SO cold.

Nah, i enjoyed getting wrapped up in my Russian hat and trench coat, walking about Berlin stuffing my face with big sausages:D
