Spec me a trip to Edinburgh

do one of the tours like mary kings close or similar - you can get them on the royal mile
http://www.realmarykingsclose.com/

pubs and clubs are a bit spread out - but theres loads on george street that imo are poncy pretentious bars if you like that sort of thing or theres plenty down the grassmarket which are a lot cheaper for drink prices

shopping - most of the shopping is on princes street and george street but tbh its the same stuff you get anywhere else, george street has most of the designer stuff, on princes street theres a debenhams, frasers and jenners which has some designer stuff and theres also john lewis in the st james centre which is just off princes street- there is also the waverly mall but its years since i've been in it so cant say how it is

When in November are you planning on coming up? Winter Wonderland seems to open on the 25th this year - there's an outdoor ice rink and a German market.

Unfortunately it's the 9th-12th November, so will miss that. Would have liked to do some ice skating too.....

There's always Murrayfield ice rink. It's cheaper and has much better ice than the outdoor rink, but significantly less romantic ;). I'd only go there during the week too, otherwise it's far too busy.

My main gripe was the compactness, I felt on a night out, despite being in lovely bars, everything was too far apart and the walking distances were off putting which resulted in hefty taxi fees. I'm use to Glasgow and holiday resorts where everything is a stone throw away, though.

You didn't plan very well then, lets face it this is about nit-picking as you clearly prefer Glasgow to everywhere :p

Sorry if I missed it, but I've skim read the thread and not found any mention of the castle??! You HAVE to visit the castle, Ideally at a time when you'll be there for the one o'clock gun too.
Great castle, great history and the guides are friendly and helpful :)

As for the shopping, well as above, it is the same stuff you can get in any city, but to be fair not a lot of people live near a propper city.
The choice and quality you can get is way higher than most big towns etc, so if your not from in/around London/Manchester etc then the shopping should be great.

As far as the zoo goes, it's not a great zoo but it very much depends on the context in which you're going... If it's with a girlfriend or boyfriend then it's fine. Have a mooch about arm in arm, talk about how cute the animals are etc.. There's something a bit romantic about it.
The penguins are great too :)

Great pubs and clubs, fantastic restaurants and a good time of year to go too. I've been to Edinburgh a few times and it just suits being cold and a bit inclement. Wrap up, look at the great buildings, have a few drinks and go with the flow.

Like most cities, it doesn't have any real MUST do's (Apart from the castle if you've never been), but there are shed loads of great things to do. Hopefully you have some ideas from the thread and ask at reception wherever you're staying, perhaps there's some short term events going on while you're there.

Enjoy it dude :)

Just got back and I've been everywhere:
Edinburgh Castle
Camera Obscura
Our Dynamic Earth
Roslin Chapel (huge disappointment)
Holyrood castle
Royal Britannia
Museum Of Childhood
Peoples Museum
Edinburgh Museum
Scott Tower
Colton Hill
Royal Mile about 5 times
The Stand Up Comedy Club (brilliant)
St Mary's Close (under the streets)
On all 4 tour buses

Zoo is fine, but i would skip it considering the weather. Stick to stuff inside. I would goto the castle, plus possibly stuff on the mile as mentioned above (ghost tours etc). Princess street is messed up due to trams, and tbh glasgow has always been said to be the better "shopping place", depends what you are after. +1 for a tour bus, no matter where I go its good for getting your bearings.

If you want specific types of restraunts then shout and I'll try to recommend
