Normally my go to would be a north face nuptse 700 down fill.

time to buy something new now as off to new York in a few weeks where is -15c at the mo.

Also do some wandering about and wild camping etc.

Not bothered about the pack down size of it or the waterproof capabilities really.

Any thoughts? and also a good place to buy from to find a bargain ( have around 200-300 to spend )

thanks in advance.

Obligatory Canada Goose namecheck. Amiright?

Warmth is all about layering though surely. I have a great Haglofs down jacket which I wear with just a shirt to work, but I'm either walking briskly to/from the tube and that's about it.

Get some good base layers, then t-shirt, decent fleece, down jacket and a windproof shell and you'll be grand.

I have a northface summit series goretex jacket. I've had to wear layers for the harshest winter (-12C) but otherwise it's been amazing.

Layering isn’t as relevant for general town use, taking off 3 layers each time you walk into a shop/get to work would be a pain.

I picked up a North Face Ventrix jacket this autumn and it’s now my go to jacket for commuting* and general use. It’s light, not bulky and surprisingly warm. It’s good enough to keep me warm down to -12 with just a a shirt and light sweater on. For those times it’s not warm enough you could just dump a lightweight down vest underneath (unlikely to be many in the UK). I now only wear my down jacket when the temps are <-15.

For most UK use I’d steer clear of down as it doesn’t like getting wet.that said, an ultralight down jacket For the evening when winter camping is a good option.

*25 minute walk each way.

I like a Rab Positron, keeps me cozy walking the dog - might be tempted to use layers and a thinner outer layer given you're likely to be in "dry" cold and in and out of places....

Wrong section :D

But i'll add Mountain Equipment Lightline jacket, warmest jacket ive ever owned and made mincemeat of some Polish winters which can get REALLY cold.

+1

Pretty sure this is the Mountain Equipment jacket I have too. It's almost too warm for me most of the time. It's like getting into a super warm sleeping bag when putting it on. Perfect for days up the airfield when wind chill takes temperature into the minus values.

I've just picked up a RAB Valiance jacket this last week. Very pleased with it so far.
Warm and very light. Specifically went for that one due to it being a waterproof(Pertex Shield) down jacket.

I utterly love my RAB Infinity Endurance when it's really cold. It's not particularly waterproof, being a down jacket, but I can go out in sub zero temps with a tshirt. It's really light and packs down fairly small (obviously not as small as a microlight down jacket but it's much thicker).

I have a 40 quid coat I bought from the internet and it's been minus -30 here for the past month.

Not sure why you spend 300 quid? Are you going to the north pole?

Try wearing a long sleeve t-shirt or underlayer base layer.

Layer up for cold.

Patagonia nano-puff hoodie for me. Packs down into a pocket, gives you a great windproof insulating outer. Adjust layers underneath depending on the weather. Job done.
