On the road....
The GF's Xantia's clutch is slipping, badly above 3rd.

The pedal is raised up quite high, so I think its new clutch time - typical, just after the pleasant surprise (shock!) of it sailing its recent MOT!

So whats a good ballpark price for a garage to supply & fit one please?

Cheers.

No idea, but it's usually always cheaper to supply it yourself and get them to fit it. If you after as cheap as possible try some breaker yards. Just specify mileage, but you pay your money and take your chance.

Mine was almost £300 earlier in the year from Mr Clutch. Was the cheapest option at the time, some garages wanted nearly £500.

£500 seems to be quite a common price paid for these. Would suggest decent parts from valeo or similar if you are going to hold on to the car.

where are these £500 quotes coming from?
The most expensive clutch kit i can find is £108 for a xantia and thats for the 2.1 turbo.

Its not £250+ worth of labour to change a clutch.

some of the french diesels are very hefty jobs pug 406's for instance with 8 hour book repair times. i dont have access to autodata at the moment but i wouldnt be surprised if £250 is just for labour and vat.

I know they are not the easiest in the world, but £300 tops is what he should be paying.
£500 is just plain theft.

I had my xantia td clutch changed couple years ago. Was about £150-175 IIIRC parts and labour.

But was getting a few other things done at the same time.

citroen xantia 2.1 td 95-97 (not enough details mr op)

book time - 8.8 hours x £45 (a reasonable out of london indy average)
clutch kit - valeo £108.65
gear oil - 2l of 75w80 £7

= £511.65

+vat

= £601.19

guessing at the precise model and going by book time, may garages may charge less on the labour time to try and secure the job.

golden rule of the motor trade - 'never buy french'.

Wow that book time is absymal!! My (citroen trained) mobile mechanic did a 1.9TD clutch in under 4 hours.. on a gravel driveway... with nothing other than him and whatever is in the back of his van. Valeo clutch kit was £90 from GSF, he charges around £25 an hour. Total was a smidge under £200 iirc.

The 2.1TD engine is notoriously difficult to work on... also nearly as rare as hens teeth these days. Id be suprised if the OP's car is a 2.1.

Find a good independant...

the 1.9 tduses a completly different gearbox to the 2.1 td (BE vs ML) the box is hugely bigger and thus means far less room to do anything.

i know the time for the 2.1 is very high but the OP didn't post any details so i posted worst case.

'hello i have a car, can you quote me for it please?'

Sorry, lol should have said its a 1.9 TD SX Estate. :o

Some pretty off putting prices there! - She only paid £600 for the car, 17 mths back, tbh, she'd struggle to find the £100 odd for the clutch itself (which is the sort of price I'd guessed for the part alone)

I'll do the rounds tomorrow morning and see if the local spanner monkeys quote me something realistic.

If its a £500 job, tbh, the car'll go and get replaced.

To spend £500 on an aged 130k P reg Xantia, with shot electrics (understatement!) would be imo plain daft.

Spotted a Mondeo TD (M reg) on the way home last night, £300 with 10 Mths MOT.

If I cannot get a half decent quote, its curtains for the Xantia!

Thanks for the reply's chaps, much appreciated.

heh, book time for the 1.9 is still 7.1 hours.

still a hefty job and a expensive one for a indy who charges by the hour, your best bet is a specialised clutch place with a fixed charge regardless of model.

The 1.9 TD is an absolute S.O.B. to work on. Back in the mists of time i learned my spanner work in a taxi garage and a lot of the cars were 405s with the 1.9 pug lump.

If a clutch came in, it was my days work. That one job. I ____ing HATE xud clutch jobs! Absolute minefield of hoses and cables.

Have you tried adjusting it? The Xantias at least have an adjustable cable. Look under the bonnet and find the clutch cable. You'll see a thread on the end of the cable with two nuts. If there's any thread left, you can take some of the slack up here.
As XUD clutches go, they're not too bad. Non turbo one's are fairly easy, the turbo version is a bit more difficult as it's a "pull" clutch rather than the standard "push" clutch.
The fiddly bit is locating the two "fingers" onto the clutch housing whilst pushing the gearbox in. At work we used to use a couple of long bolts with the heads cut off to locate and hang the gearbox on, then this gives you just enough room to juggle the fingers into place whilst pushin the box on. :)
We used to charge about £150 plus the clutch on these iirc. :)

Mondeo clutches are more difficult imho as you have to partly drop the subframe iirc!

Took me nigh on 6-8 hours to do my 306 td a few years, but that was a complete noob, i was quoted around 280 notes at the time to do it, i just picked up a SH cluch and pressure plate and all was well tbh

you pretty much have to drop the subframe completely on the mondeo's, first one i did took about 8 hours. the customer refused a new concentric slave at the time which has since failed (8 months after the work), he is now demanding we don't charge labour again to fit the new one. he can sod off tbh.
