I would go for a Cowon D2, but I'm not so sure about using the internal memory + SD cards. Need something portable-ish, and not an ipod or creative (from my experience ipods aren't the best music quality and creative players are sloooooow.)

go for a Cowon D2 then as its an excellent player, but so are the Ipod Nano and the Creative Zen which i tihnk is the best of the Portable Flash based players. also theirs the Sandisk Sansa

That narrows it down a bit. Which is the smallest of these players and what size SD cards are available? Doesn't using SD cards make file transfer slower?

I've just put some albums on the D2's SD card that I have and I didn't notice it being any slower than putting albums onto the flash memory.

The D2 is smaller than a credit card. It looks bigger in the pics than it actually is.

transferring to either is dog slow over usb. i didnt bother putting music on my d2's internal memory, just used a card reader instead. MUCH faster.

they are that big, basically. easily the best player with upgradable memory, though with 8gb coming as standard, im beginning to think upgradable memory is nice, if a little pointless. 8gb flash, or 60gb + drive-player for a few quid more....i know flash players are great and all, but at the prices we are talking about they start to make no sense whatsoever.

im getting a new player (my d2 got stolen)......dont know yet, but im itching to try an nwz-a818

Great, thanks. I'll look into buying a 4GB D2 with an 8GB SD card,as it ends up cheaper than buying the 8GB model.
How is the touchscreen on these? Hoping it's not very fiddly.

The 8GB M6 Meizu might appeal to you, for its cheap price point (approx £80 delivered). The sound quality isnt quite cowon, but its a lot better than Ipod etc.
Its also pretty damned small.

The Meizu isn't upgradable though, is it? Just 8GB might be stretching it, as the reason I'm looking for a new mp3 player is that I've just filled my NW-A1000 (6GB)

Touch screen is perfect when you use your fingers. The stylus pen isn't very good though.

iPod Nano sound quality isnt up to the job IMHO!

My Cowon iAudio 7 (16Gb) is on its way from the US - I might also get myself a D2 too!

iRiver stuff IMHO is EXCELLENT in the sound quality dept - will post iAudio 7 results later on this week hopefully.

Been looking at a new 8gb MP3 player also.
I'd narrowed it down to either the Sony NWZA818 at £119.99 or the new (re-vamped model) Sandisk Sansa View for just over £100.
