Hey all,

Some of you may remember that about a year ago I asked for ISP recomendations for my change from dial up to broadband. Against some people's advice I went for E7even (who switched to being called E7broadband). Today, it looks like they have finally gone bust. Now I'm sure many of you are sitting there rather smugly thinking 'I told you so' :o . I would like to point out though, even though I've only had half of my 2 year contract, it still works out to be very good value for a 1mb unlimited connection that has been reliable whilst it's been working. More to the point, people have had success claiming the money back from their credit card company for undeliverred service, so with any luck I too will be able to do this too :).

Anyway, to get to the point of this thread - I need a new ASDL ISP. Basically, it needs to be preferably 1mb (as this is *usually* the most checkers say we can have at our address), but importantly must be unlimited. Unusually enough, email does not need to be provided by them (though I imagine most do these days). I am happy with poorer customer support if it means a cheaper service, and despite my previous experiences I'm still happy to pay up front for my connection if it means less cost. :D

I haven't been able to find many attractive offers yet, except for on Tiscali, who have unlimited 1mb for £12.99, but the offer ends tomorrow, and I doubt somehow I'll get my MAC by then :(.

Any help much appreciated! :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention - I also have a DG834G router, so have no need for a new modem.

Also, are there any quick ways of getting temporary broadband back?

Pay-as-you-go broadband perhaps? Quick-start short contracts maybe?

As far as I'm aware AOL are pretty much the only "unlimited" provider left, especially with most ISPs dropping fixed rate services.

If you absolutely couldn't have unlimited, what sort of GB are you thinking about per month?

tbh, there is no decent isp

so just pick one for under 20 quid a month ull be ok

you will be no better off picking a premium isp, as they are no better

imo of course ;)

Tiscali have an FUP, they also have traffic shaping, you can only download outside of the peak hrs, and the peak hrs are from 6pm till 11pm, but when you do download your limited to around 10k as of the traffic shaping, that is even on their MAX 8 meg service, 10k is all you will get on an 8mb connection, get 3x FUP warnings and you get put on the bad boy pipe where your connection is seriously restricted again, you can get FUP warnings by downloading inside the peak hrs, and also browsing during the peak hrs.

Yes that is correct, browse to much during peak hrs will get you FUP warnings, i migrated away from those jokers a couple of weeks ago, do not go near Tiscali, im on AOL 100% Unlimited, no FUP, no shaping, nothing, download what i want, when i want, how much i want. :)

Zen Internet is good, alough depends how much you download, this service is really good along with speed. Some people have had issues but not everthing can be hunky dory. Zen Internet is rather pricey around £24.99 for a 20GB cap. Its good if you don't use a lot of bandwidth in the month. £34.99 for a 50GB cap and then after that you pay £1.00 for 1GB after you go over your limit. This service is the new maxADSL around 8MB or below, depends how far you are away from the exchange. I've been with Zen for 3 years with no problems at all. Always been on when I need it. Theres a lot more good ISPs and AOL is good for unresctricted uncapped always on broadband but their support stinks. Anyway hope you find one soon. Good luck.

Hmm, looks like I better stay away from Tiscali then.

I've also been looking at the following:
- Euro1net (yes, a bit like E7even, but the word on ADSLguide is they're much better)
- Toucan Broadband (probably have similar traffic shaping)
- UK Online (http://www.ukonline.net/) EDIT: Sorry cable only :o

I always thought AOL was the butt of all internet-related jokes because of it's poor quality connection and over-control of what you can do with your connnection.

I've heard about how supposedly great Zen are, but they're far too pricey for my liking. For the record, I'll try and work out how much I use a month.

I can't get LLU unfortunately.

Have to admit i was caught in that trap, for some reason its cool, l33t to slate AOL, and its mostly the ppl who have never used them, i migrated over to them from Tsicali about a month ago now, and they are absolutely fine, ive no problems at all, its 100% unlimited, no FUP, shaping nothing as said, and heres nothing wrong with the connection, you do not have to use their software either, i don't, and i use Outlook Express that you get on XP to get my e-mails. :)

I was paying £14.99 for Tiscali as i missed the £12.99 offer, im only paying £17.99 on AOL (£3 more), and i get the first month free, and then 6 months at £14.99 then it goes to £17.99 there after, so an extra £3 for a totally unlimited connection that i can use whenever i want is fine by me. :)

Toucan's a resold Tiscali service, so the same applies.

Nope, LLU.

If you expect unlimited without traffic shaping, or the ISP telling you where to go if you do more than they'd like you to, your only option is to cough up.

For the record, I'll try and work out how much I use a month.

That would be an excellent idea.

You can't really go wrong with either Zen or Nildram. Nildram are cheaper which will probably suit you, but Zen offer the better service.

IDNet get my vote tbh.
