Spec me an all rounder for 7k

Must confess that I don't think the Monaro is a great candidate. No finesse. Don't even sound that good standard. Quite old fashioned too. Seem to have to plough a small fortune to them to get anything enjoyable out of it. Rather have a Supra.

Do go sideways nicely though.

OP spec:
*Max budget of approximately 7k - CV8 just-about doable, VXR unlikely. Hard to find a very good one though.
*fast - yup, very long gears though, so not fast off the blocks
*relatively practical (useable rear seats are a must) - the early (pre-US launch) ones have a massive boot, and the rear seats are lovely. Access to the rear seats however, is slow and limited.
*comfortable and wont be out of place on a track day - yup

Many have aftermarket exhausts because as you say, the stock sound is a bit muted. I'm liking mine (04 CV8 with Wortec exhaust and remap) but it's a very refined ride - lacks rawness. Most parts are cheap (in relative terms), although if you're going to tinker it does quickly get expensive.

As for the interior, yes it's basic, but an Evo isn't exactly luxurious, neither is a Monaro or a Sourer for that part...

A sourer isnt luxurious? Ok so its a little dated and I'm pointing at the UZZ31 rather than the JZZ30 than Joshy would be looking at but have you seen what was available for them, I'd say fairly impressive for a 20 year old car.

The Soarer is - perhaps not by contemporary standards but it was designed and built as a luxury grand tourer, hence the majority being automatic.

Certainly not to the standard of a 3 or 5 series or most things German.

BTW, OP, I know someone selling a mint E39 M5 if that floats your boat? He's getting rid of it for cheap as he test drove an 2004 E55K and wants it ASAP. Naturally the part ex price on the E39 is atrocious.

Out of curiosity on what basis? RWD wasn't mentioned as a must

On the basis that he isn't buying a car solely for track use, and as someone who likes the power delivery of large capacity engines, he won't (and I wouldn't want, nor do I like) the power delivery of a VTEC engine. I know it wasn't mentioned as a must, but Joshy prefers RWD.

I would also want something a little more "up market" in the interior design/feel/features.

I agree that the DC5 is technologically a great car, especially for the track, but it's not for everyone, so dismissing it off-the-bat isn't necessarily a "crazy" idea.

E39 sounds ideal choice , fast, practicle and just in budget but you may end up with a high miler like I did but I bought on condition and service aand seemed to have a good one , no major issues in over a year.

Yea, dont get why its such a big deal to dismiss a DC5 out of hand? I know how good the DC5 is but I'd never, ever consider buying one despite never having driven one. It's absolutely not my sort of car, infact if the only two cars I could buy were a Golf diesel or a DC5 I'd honestly buy the Golf diesel. Pretty much everything I love in cars bar the performance aspect is missing from the DC5. Not because its a bad car but because it's a different car.

The fact its 'just' in budget stops it being the ideal choice, IMHO. You don't want a cheapo one and even without labour considerations (Though there would still be some, right?) the potential for relentless cost is epic unless you are either very lucky or bodge everything to death.

Most of them are just **** now and the really nice ones are held by people with massive overinflated sense of what they are worth so sit on PH for ever at bonkers 5 figure prices.

So is a Ford Focus, whats your point? :p

That the OP dismissed a car for having a poor interior (forgetting the other reasons for a moment), but is willing to consider an Evo or Monaro. I'd say the interior of a DC5 and an Evo 8 are of similar build quality and spec, both far from luxurious.

As for the E39 my friend is selling, it's been looked after and is priced to sell. If the OP has interest, I can post more details.
