Hi folks,

My company has asked me to choose a phone for work, can be anything available from Vodafone. To be used mainly for calls and SMS (work related), and personal GMail/Skype/messaging etc. It won't (over my dead body) be used for work email, hopefully. ;)

I don't want an iPhone4, partly as 6 of my colleagues have them and all moan constantly about battery life, dropped calls etc. I also have personal reasons for not wanting one, mainly because I don't like the idea of Apple telling me what I'm allowed to do with it. This is a seperate subject though, not for this thread.

Blackberry is out, I've used them in the past and liked them, but I think they are pretty limited in what they offer these days compared to the competition. Plus my main use will not be work email, where the Blackberry would obviously shine.

So, I want to try an Android, the main factors are.

1. Needs to be 100% compatible with Google GMail/Contacts/Calendar. I use these daily, and must be able to sync these live over the air without having to plug into a PC/Mac to sync up. I use this to a limited extent with SyncML on my Sony Ericsson Elm.

2. Ideally would like the newest, most state of the art model, I won't get another one for 18 months.

3. Must be available from Vodafone.

So what should I be looking at, presumably a Google Nexus or HTC of some flavour?

Cheers. :)

HTC Desire Z would be the only phone I'd look at .... awesome phone, awesome operating system and a hardware QWERTY keyboard! Perfect! :)

Edit: Oh ... and you would be able to get your work emails very easily on it haha ;) ....

Galaxy S - All rounder with a fancy screen
Desire HD - All rounder but with new HTC sense
DesireZ - Hardware keyboard - best for high volume texting / lightweight games
Motorola Defy - For people who break their phones / drop them. This thing is a tank. Dust/water/kid proof.

A nexus is a bit old in smartphone standards now, The other options are more appealing in my opinion. For some reason people get in a strop that the Z had a slower CPU which while true, it honestly isn't all that different to the nexus one / original desire in terms of ability. Nothing to really moan at and if you'd prefer the hw keyboard, this would be a better choice.

The Desire HD has much worse battery life than an iphone4 so stay clear if that is an important factor.

Galaxy S imo feels tacky and the GPS isn't great.

Defy would be a fantastic phone if it was running Android 2.2 rather than 2.1

Desire Z is great if you can cope with the bulk and extra weight.

There is never a perfect option :)

If you are worried about battery life just stick it on charge very night. No problems with the battery throughout the day then.

Desire HD.

In my experience unless you absolutely hammer it with the screen on loads it wont go flat on you in a day, no chance.

Chances are, you'll have to charge whichever one you buy every day if you use it quite a bit, so you might as well get the most powerful one.

I use mine moderately and get just about 2 days out of it very easily.
