all i need is something that is gonna be low on the energy bills compact and is able to stream information to at least 4 devices with no interuptions...and no need for a hdd as they will be external and i have a variety of others for the internal os, was thinking of ubuntu ... i was thinking of the asus eee box but it dosent seem to do well on displaying hd content so im worried if it could stream to 4 different devices using standard content ??

Being able to display HD content, and stream it are two different things. The PC that is receiving the stream is what needs to be powerful enough to display HD content.

I would have thought the eee box would be perfect for the job.

I'm doing to do a similar thing sometime before xmas but I'm planning on having internal storage. Basically the server will serve media to my PS3 and a popcorn hour, download and make backups.

What I've decided on is getting an Intel Atom mobo, a cheap small case with space for 3x 3.5" drives and 1Gb of laptop RAM. All of that shouldn't come to much more than £130, add some storage and it should be good to go. I'll probably run windows home server though but that's an expense you won't have.

I did look at pre-built options like the Eee Box but the selection is very limited at the moment and none of them were exactly what I was looking for, in the near future there may be better options available but I'm running out of space fast and can't really wait.

As for being able to get the data to 4 devices at once, I'm not sure, I've not looked into it as I'd only be using one device to get the media at once.

Someone has just released a Dual-Core Atom CPU powered WHS box with 5 removable HDD racks. Pricing varies depending on the spec and if you need the software with it but varies between £300 and £500. It can even be expanded with an additional plug in box connected via eSATA which can connect another 5 HDDs. Doubt I can link to it directly but you can read more on www.wegotserved.co.uk or www.lowpowercomputing.co.uk

If this had been available when I built my WHS I would probably have got this instead.

well currently im using a pentium 4 at 1.8ghz with a 60gig internal and 700mb ram and a 1 tb + 250 gb external, this acts as a streaming device for my ps3 360 and a couple of laptops, with 4 people using it at max the asus eee box seems to be the way but...wether or not itll keep up with the pace is another thing entirely ! i am liking your idea though it sounds like a plan of action!

Fair enough :)

i didnt bother with nlite, i just went through most things myself as i didnt have the internet at the time i think i need a gig minimum as ive noticed some stuttering lately its either that or the o2 box just is not handling the data transfer rates.... was using a linksys wrt54g before
