Spec me an in depth strategy game

Try a game called Perimeter. You'll be able to pick it up really cheap. It's not well known but really awesome and unique in its concept.

It was really graphically intense a few years ago but nowadays would probably run amazing.

Galactic Civilizations 2!

Don't get anything else! The Ultimate Edition is £5 on Amazon, which includes both expansion packs. Its like Civ but in space!

How well has it aged, I have the original, I found it lots it's edge/originality a bit quickly. Do both the expansions improve on it quite a lot?

get the steam version?

could have got it for under a fiver in the sales an no fuss :p

That does sound like fuss free plan.:) Trouble is i'll make any excuse to pass on the strategy,i'm always looking for the next FPS,RPG or action adventure.
I've still got Rome Total War and DOW boxed up + others if I had a rummage, should be ashamed of meself!:o

Freedom Force 1 & 2 (hybrid rts/rpg)
Shogun Total War 1 & 2 (2 soon to be released)
Homeworld 1 & 2
Defense Grid (total defence game)

Well, if we're speccing hybrids :D

Mount and Blade - RPG, Warband/Kingdom strategy, battlefield hack n slash

Then download the multitude of troop command mods (the default system is very poor) and enjoy shouting "Charge!" at the top of your lungs as you ride in flank formation with your calvary.

For TBS try the King's Bounty series (first one is called King's Bounty: The Legend).
For base building RTS I don't think you need to look beyond Starcraft 2 if you haven't already played it.

Could you suggest me one? As you say the in game system is fairly poor, so I just don't bother with tactic! Pure barbarian charge.

-Company of Heroes (for a very good WWII RTS)
-Settlers (love some of these games for their humour and sense of community that you're building. Newest one I've played is Rise of an Empire, but you can try older ones if graphics aren't too important)
- Sins of a Solar Empire (Epic space opera RTS, be prepared to lose days playing this, but well worth it)

I remember someone telling me about homeworld and another ame called alpha centauri ? But haven't found them anywhere (are these quite old titles ?).

Alpha Centauri had a wonderful setting and was a better game than Civ2 at the time. But I wouldnt suggest going back to it. Homeworld however, is worth digging up.

There are some big mods available for Medieval TW such as Third Age (Tolken mod), Call of Warhammer and Stainless Steel (big ass expansion of the original game done well). Prob not worth it for the first two if you are not interested in the settings for both of these.

Apparently a couple of big worth while mods out for Civ4. Dawn of War II Retribution beta (multiplayer) starts on Feb 8th if you are willing to pre-order it.

I had to get home to see my mods list before I can can tell ya :D

Most of these require Warband and they may may not be compatible with one another. So a little bit more research is required.

Battle size changer - Need. This. Mod. No ifs or buts.

Native Expansion - Troop formation ability, new units, kingdom management

Custom Settlements - Does what it says on the tin. Can be flakey though.

Expanded Gameplay III - Just better battles! And combat.

Diplomacy - Awesome. Just awesome.

And there's a combat animation mod. Can't remember it's name and can't find it in my mod file...

To be honest I felt the same about DoW2 when I first played it, but it does grow on you. It is a completely different way of doing an RTS and is all about the micro and counters. I have grown to really love it. The new expansion Retribution is out in march which is completely through steamworks and no more GFWL and should be a great game. I would definately suggest trying it out again.

If you can still wait till March, Shogun 2: Total War is shaping up to be a great game, and is on my pre-order list, along with retribution. Might be worth checking out.

thanks for the sugestions guys

I have now ordered and am awaiting the following

Homeworld 1 and 2
Sins of a solar empire

Bought Hearts of Iron III and Europa Universalis off steam , the later was up for an insanely low price

See you all in 2015 :)
