Appologies for a slightly long winded spec me post - hopefully you'll see why I'm struggling.
To start with, my current rig:
MSI H61M-E33 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard **B3 REVISION**
Intel Celeron G530 2.40GHz Socket LGA 1155 Processor - Retail
Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1333C9D3B1K2/4G)
Seagate ST3500418AS 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache
Sapphrie HD 4850 512MB GDDR3
Unbranded PSU, wattage unknown (I know, don't shoot me)
Usage - Games are primary over everything else, but I like to dabble in video editing from time to time. I would not compromise gaming power for video editing power though.
So, here is the deal - I have £450 saved for upgrading my PC, and £350 coming next month, so max total is £800. BUT, this is not a "spec me an £800 upgrade" question.
After years of doing biggish upgrades every few years, I am setting myself an ongoing £100 monthly budget for the future, with which I will upgrade as an when I can afford the next big part I want. The advantage of this is that parts being replaced will still have a decent amount of life and second hand value left over, feeding future upgrades (I hope)
This means I don't need to get everything in at once. For example, I could stick with my 500Gb for now, and upgrade to an SSD in a few months time (Just a random example plucked from the air)
Also, I don't need to spend all £800 - there are plenty of other uses I can put the money to. I know the instinct in a spec me thread is to spend it all, but I'd rather hit the price/performance sweet spot than just spend it all. If that means spending all £800, thats fine to.
tl;dr: You have the above rig. You have max £450 now. You have max £350 next month. You have £100 a month (Plus the second hand value of replaced parts) from then on. What would you do? What would you aim for in the future?
