So i am at the point of recommissioning my main PC that has been out of action due to PSU failure and would like to do an upgrade as motherboard is gone too
already have a case,
2 280xs
2 x SSDs that i will RAID 0
new PSU is 1000W Platinum EVGA
significant tasks
1)i do a good old bit of photoshop and like to stack images where time took quite a while previously. Not sure if this was CPU/GPU limitation
2) large spreadsheets and macros for work that can fill excel 2010 to the bottom of the sheet. Sometimes macros take time on this. I dont think more cores will solve this. some functions in excel seem to be number of cores limited
3) have a stats package that sometimes eats up the ram. I THINK this is a quantity not speed etc issue. i cannot be sure
also i often have to do iterations where thousands of models run consecutively.
i fell this is CPU limited. but not sure if more cores will help.
4)games! - the monitor is 1440P
After all this to me i need a CPU that is more high clocking rather than lots of cores..ie not AMD?? anything like turbo (where cores are boosted) would be very useful i think.
The reason i am unsure about cores is my work laptop is 2 + 2 cores and 32 bit. so i do not know for sure if im software or hardware limited
i dont feel anything else i do needs more than the tasks above
I am out of the loop on cpus/ram/mobos and havent really looked since i7 920 days
