I currently have an old Barton 2500XP Clocked to 3200XP running 24/7 for the past 3.5 years. All in all its great but I'd like to upgrade as its starting to struggle with newer games and feels a bot slow compared to newer systems I deal with every day (I'm an IT geek so get to play with servers and high spec stuff)

Ideally I'd like something fairly nipppy but not OTT. I already have a decent PSU Corsair hx620) and HDD/DVD from the existing PC.

CPU
Cooler
RAM
Mobo
Graphics

Looking to spend less rather than more.

I used to be a major overclocker but have lost that hunger so something that clocks up nicely without too much hassle :)

e2160, Thermalright 120 Ultra extreme (+ fan of your choice), OCuk 8500 RAM, Abit IP35, 8800 GTS 640MB.

Job done.

That lot comes to £493 inc VAT and delivery (but not including your fan).

CPU looks impressive for the price!

I'd be happier having a lesser spec graphics card.

Motherboard looks good!

Will the RAM keep up with the clocked CPU?

Cooler look huge! May be issues fitting it in my PC7 Lian Li case?

to be fair the gts is the lower of the 8800 graphics cards, what games are you looking to play ?

I just saw the price and thought

I'll be playing things like Battlefield 2/2142, EVE and maybe some C&C type games.

Drop down to a 8800 GTS 320MB, or even pick up a x1950XT and you'll be fine for those games.

The memory is too fast, but it is so cheap it would be rude not to. :D

How do the 8800 GTE 320MB and X1950XT compare?

I'm sooooo behind on newer technology! Damn my reliable 2500XP system!!!

The 8800 GTS 320MB is very fast 1280 x 1024 graphics 'solution' that will have your AF sliders up to 16x. Depending on the application, the x1950 XT is about 1/4 to 1/2 slower, but still fast and dirt cheap (where you can get it, can't see any at OCuk).

I would go for the 8800 GTS 320MB.

Fair enough :)

So with the above components I should be able to hit aroind a 3GHz overclock with no stability problems. Be able to play BF2 and the like at a decent WS resolution and it will blow away my 2500XP :)

it wont just blow away your 2500+, it will abduct it hold it to ransom and then murder it once it has the monies :D

lol :)

Would I need any RAM cooling with a 3GHz overclock as it doesnt look like the OcUK RAM comes with any?

Also, I didnt realise there were so many different chipsets. P35/975X/965P! Is the P35 the one to go for?

I feel so lame no knowing. After my 2500XP system I gave up on keeping upto date!! Damn my lazyness!!

p35 is the latest and therefor the most desirable to have it supposidly runs faster and cooler? i may be wrong though i use the g33m wich is the matx part of the bearlake p35 famiely.
ram cooling is a little contriversial as unless you are going for the dominator style cooler poeple advise that ram plates? the little shrouds that you can by from coolermasterand such companys act more like insulators, but besides that i cant see you needing any, there are quite a few people who do just fine without allthough it can never hurt.

RAM cooling is just there to make it look pretty in 90% of cases. If you get PC6400 or PC8500 you won't need to overclock the RAM when you overclock the CPU, so cooling is a bit of a non-issue.

I went from a 2800XP system to what you're buying. You might find that you have to get a spare pair of trousers ready... :D
