Looking at getting house insurance for my new house when i move in next year.

Anyhow im slightly confused to as what I need, I know I need buildings and contents, but im not sure if stuff like bathrooms suites and kitchen units come under the buiildings side or the contents side.I have been told to value up each room, basically what it would cost to replace everything in the room etc.

Any tips lads?

I've had very good results from this site.
When you get your final quote, try raising your contents limit and lowering your excess. Sometimes you can find that raising your contents limit can change the resultant insurer and lower your quote.

There's other stuff you can put on your contents insurance too, like legal cover and personal belongings cover. I'm renting and the buildings insurance is done by my landlord, I got my contents with Asda, I've got contents cover up to £35000, "legal services" and £2000 of personal belongings cover and I'm paying about £24 a month. It also includes carpets and sofas and stuff. Consider what you will want and include those in the comparisons between quotes.

If you've having a shed, consider what cover you will need for it, will you be storing expensive mountain bikes in it for example? Pedal cycle cover would have been extra for me, but luckily, I never go outside.

Shop around, you might find you have a better price if you get your buildings seperately from your contents. Also, I don't know if it works for house insurance like it works for car insurance, but try doing it over the phone and playing the different insurers against each other.

Generally if it's bolted to the wall/floor then it comes under the fixtures & fittings part of buildings cover but as always check the small print.

Checking the value of each room is good advice but make sure you count everything - clothes are one that folk always underestimate.

Always check levels of cover when comparing policies. Is accidental damage covered? What's the maximum single item value? Is it new for old replacement or simply current value? What cover do you have for items outside the home? Are you covered for loss of metered water? Frozen food cover?

definitely go through a cashback site like rpoints. Just renewed my buildings insurance...£160 to stay with direct line, but instead clicked through rpoints to barclays which costs £170 but I'll get £65 back from rpoints, so £105 in total.

Going to do the same thing with contents insurance.
