Spec me some (IT) qualifications.

I read you comment and i dissagreed with it.
No knowlage of the field? The Field Of IT?? Much experiance thanks :D

Now you're not making sense.

What we're saying is that in the IT sector Experience -> Qualifications. In most cases!

In fact, read up at the link posted just now about a decent job that doesn't need qualifications but needs five years experience.

I got my current job on experience alone, it's only since working here I've actually bothered and had the funding to get a few certs under my belt.

Not sure what do get done next, got some training cash coming my way very soon which will pay for a quick Prince2 course.

I'll have to look into the S+ - I have heard of it before.

I just think the S+ is quite a good thing for any IT staff to do to maybe get them thinking about security a bit more.

It's pretty light, I know Morrissons send all their IT staff on the course.

When I did it there were at least 6 people from there, only a couple passed it though :p

Actually thinking about it not many people passed it that day.

Well by your own admission your're still doing a degree

Actually, I work in IT, Im doing a Degree in AI & Robotics.

so you haven't actually completed it yet.

If you have a job, then blatently it isn't because you got a degree, because you havent got one yet. Kinda prooves my point....

me either so i'm not sure what his point is. He's implying you need qualifications to get a job, but the in the next breath tells us he's got a job in IT without one, and appears to be wanting to change away from IT completely, to robotics

AI and Robotics doesn't really sound like an "IT" degree.

AI & Robotics is very much and IT degree...

Artificial Intelligence is created useing programming lanuages such as C, C++, C#, NQC...
Fuzzy Logic amungst other things.
Robotics Is also veru much IT.. programming and building Micro computers from scratch...
Building own drivers upon windows and unix platforms... bla blah blah... something most "IT Specalists" would dream of...

So im sorry but how is it not a IT degree?? It runs along side of Computing Science.

I have Many qulifications... GNVQ in ICT, B-tech in Computeing... amunst others.

Not really, sounds more like a programmers wet dream tbh ;) Remember that IT is a very generic term that covers a huge range of work.

All sounds like stuff I don't/wouldn't like doing in IT.

Microcomputer work is cool, but in 'the real world' that's more electronics roles rather than IT.

Yes it's all computers, but the kind of IT that the guys are talking about here is more about infrastructure rather than development which is more what you're degree is focused on.

Just thought I'd explain a bit more as yes what you are doing is IT, but it's one very specific area of IT.

The OP wants to do network design and admin, which is a little different to programming, AI, building microcomputers from scratch etc.

Thinking about it I did programming (C++, assembly language etc) and microprocessor systems design in my degree, but it wasn't an IT degree :p

I have found that the quality of people with degrees has gone downhill over the past 5-10 years. So much so that I'm considering dropping my standard "2:1 degree" requirement to merely being able to submit a CV without any spelling mistakes in it.

:(

I've never really looked at the degree people did anyway, it's usually a pretty long time ago - and recent/relevant experience (especially in the field of programming) is far more important than successfully completing a 2 year COBOL foundation module at Uni.
