Another vote for the Edifier S350DB.
The sound is very clear, at least for my untrained ears.
The bass is noticeable, even without going too loud.
For music they're fine, but I love them for movies and games.
For music I use, more often, the Beyerdynamics 770 Pro, unless I'm in the mood for some loud-ish Aggrotech, then the Edifier is king.
Tried Demon Souls yesterday and is a better upgrade for the gaming experience than going from a 1440p monitor to a 4k display.

Any space requirements?
Do you have room for bookshelf, floorstanding speakers, full size amplifier(s) pre/power amps?

Personally have iLoud micro monitors and Beyerdynamic DT1770 pro headphones hooked up to Soundblaster G6.

Living room I have a Naim Muso

I used to have B&W 603s and Nad c370 amp. Sounded fantastic but does take space. £400 budget you could go second hand and get a really good amp & speaker combo.

Also, does the £400 need to cover change of sound source too? (External DAC / soundcard)

Edit. £300 gets you a good amp & speaker combo. Leaves £100 for source upgrade

So Edifier S360DB's setup on stands and sounding great, very pleased :)

Looking good. Otherwise you might want to try raising those speaker a little, you want to get the area between tweeter and driver near to ear level. If sound is to bright then you lower the tweeter a little or turn speakers out a little more.

Also if you put some isolation foam under the speaker, it will help sound more.
