Spec me...stuff to do in Japan!

One of my favorite places in Tokyo is Yoyogi park. On Sundays you can see lots of performers, big gangs of Elvis impersonators and people in weird costumes offering free hugs. It's in Harajuku which is an area worth visiting anyway if you're into shopping.

Weird - From reading your OP I could have sworn you were my mate who I've planned to go to Japan with for 2 weeks next month. Even more coincidence is the fact that, just like you, we've planned to go to Tokyo and Kyoto, and probably a train pass but nothing else. I will be watching this thread closely :)

If you going to go with the trainpass, buy it in advance, a mate who went said they run out when he went to buy one. Better be sure though.

When I went 4 years ago this is what my itinerary looked like. I didn't do all of it or in that order but it might give you some ideas.

The Peace Park in Hiroshima was the highlight of my visit to Japan. Even now 10-15 years later I still remember this as being one of the best places I've ever been.

Tokyo Ginza district was fun, and got very drunk! Not sure what it's like now 10-15 years later.

I found some of the Taxi drivers had problems with English, and my Japanese was poor. So I got hotel name and address, railway station, airport, etc written on pieces of paper.

Edit.
Play Vending machine roulette. You can never be to sure what you'll get!!!!!!!!!

Been backpacking around Asia this summer and stayed in Japan for about 3 weeks.

Kyoto is full of temples and foreigners. I think its really over-rated (in hindsight). Once you seen two temples, you really seen them all. There are far more epic places in Japan, I prefer these two far far more, they are in Kansai region (Osaka).

Tottori sand dunes
Stairway to Heaven
Also Okinawa only stayed in Naha

As for Tokyo... It was good, but Akihabara was crap unless you are into proper electrical diy. Rest were interesting, although to be honest everyone travels differently, so take that with a pinch of salt.

Personally I do want to come back to Japan to see Hokkaido at some time later. Anyway I got a team meeting in a minute, but will post more after, if you got any questions.

Awesome. These are the kind of thing I've been looking for as I'm a bit worried we'd end up in cities the whole time. :)

Well I don't live in sydney so it's unlikely we've met. :p

I'll be in Japan also from 8th - 15th March

Flying to Tokyo, not sure exactly where I'm going yet but will also be watching this thread :D

We'll you're going just before me so you can scout it out for me and update this threads with pics and good places to go. (Goes to you to megakid!) :)

I've only lived here for a little under 2 years :) I'm meeting a good mate of mine from London in Tokyo - I told him it was half way...mum's the word, ok?

Depends what holiday you want really, after being there, I think Kyoto is way overrated, Tokyo is good fun, I can recommend staying in Otsuka Station hotel, its relatively cheap (for Tokyo) but on the circle line, a really good hub. Rooms a kinda small, but hey thats Tokyo.

When I was there staying with a friend he said Tokyo Tower was alright, but not worth the cash to go up to the top. But is worth a trip to go see it.

I'd recommend going up to the bar at the top of the Hyatt, absolutely stunning view. Also what they used as the lobby for the film lost in translation. Wasn't cheap drinks, but nowhere really is there, but was a nice place to go.

If you like clubbing you absolutely must get to a club called Womb, it's amazingly good.

Other than that all the touristy bits really, I liked Shibuya, Shinjuku was ok, Rappongi was a bit of a tourist trap imho, wasn't a fan.

Stayed in Akihibara in a capsule hotel, was dirt cheap and was exactly what we wanted as we weren't in much. It was 2006 when the world cup was over in Europe, so all the games were being played at like 12 and 4 in the morning so ended up staying up and out all night.

There was an english style pub there, well what they thought an english pub would be like, called the rose and crown, was nice for a meal and a drink :)

If you're going 'in season' then do a night ascent of Mt Fuji, was a lovely thing to do.

Other than go and see as much as you can, just wander around, it's an awesome place :)
