got a mate who has *some* money to spend on getting himself a new rig

most of us on here are enthusiasts anyway, and i know what i would spec, but i wanted to throw it open, and see what you would offer.

he wants something to run todays games reasonably well, but isnt in to the benchmarking, ninija-turbo PC scene, so isnt looking for the most insane harcore rig ...

what say you?

:)

I'd say about ~£550 is enough, which would get you an Athlon 64 3200, 1GB RAM, 160GB SATA drive, and an X800GTO16 (if its still on offer) etc.

As the topic itself and the first post quite clearly states, it's going to be for gaming but without spending a lot of money. A decent gaming machine but as cheap as possible - something with an X2 and 7900 does not fit that description.

I'd probably suggest something like this:

GX-080-LT Leadtek GeForce 7600 GT 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-080-LT) 1
£119.95 £119.95
CP-141-AM AMD Opteron UP 144 San Diego 1.8GHz 1MB Cache (Socket 939) - Retail (CP-141-AM) 1
£104.95 £104.95
MY-005-GL GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5 (GE1GB3200BHDC) (MY-005-GL) 1
£48.95 £48.95
MB-101-AS Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS) 1
£64.95 £64.95
CD-030-NE NEC ND4570 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM (CD-030-NE) 1
£24.95 £24.95
HD-088-MD Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 NCQ 250GB 6V250F0 SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-088-MD) 1
£52.95 £52.95
CA-026-EN Enermax Liberty 400W ELT400AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CA-026-EN) 1
£41.95 £41.95
CA-004-AS Asus TA-210 Series Midi Tower (Black) - 360W PSU (CA-004-AS) 1
£34.95 £34.95
Subtotal £493.60
VAT £86.38
Total £579.98

I just slapped a random case on for the hell of it, but that's what I'd suggest and it's a pretty nice PC for under £600. Could save a few quid by going for a 3200+ too. That's pretty much the minimum PC I'd personally recommend although there's many ways of making it cheaper without sacrificing much.

You know what would help...?

A budget, because cheap for one person is not the same for another person. Same as just being able to play a game is diferent for people, for example I use a 20inch widescreen so an x800gto would be naff.

Yhat rite mate as i have a 24" dell

A gto as wel wil not last as long as a gtx with sm3 and hdr

I said about £550 because I thought it was a reasonable amount for a rig that can play today's games. You could lower it to £450 but you'd have to sacrifice somewhere.
